Exhibit: Fallout: In the Aftermath Of War

In conjunction with the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center-IHC series "Fallout: In the Aftermath of War," the UCSB Library is currently showing in its first floor gallery a large-scale mural that was co-created by artist-veteran Dominic Fredianelli and UCSB students Emmanuel Barragan, Natalia Cardenas, Ime Diaz, Jacky Martinez, and Bryan Orpinela this past fall. The piece reflects, through graffiti-like images, Fredianelli's own experiences as a veteran of the War in Afghanistan and the experiences of UCSB student veterans.

Library's Chryss Yost Named City of Santa Barbara's Poet Laureate

Chryss YostCongratulations to library employee Chryss Yost, who has just been named the City of Santa Barbara's Poet Laureate.

The City of Santa Barbara established a position of poet laureate in 2005 in order to direct attention and honor to the spoken word by utilizing poetry to celebrate and elevate community events.

KCLU Interviews David Seubert about Historic Sound Recordings

David Seubert, Acting Head of Special Collections, was featured on KCLU about the grant that UCSB Library recently received to catalog thousands of wax cylinders and 78 rpm disks featuring historic recordings from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, France, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, and Spain. Librarian Janet Martorana wins Nyholm Prize

Janet MartoranaJanet Martorana -- Head, Collection Development -- has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Amy and Jens Nyholm Prize, awarded to a librarian who has made "an outstanding contribution to librarianship" during the past year. Janet's citation from University Librarian Denise Stephens indicates that she has provided "creative and energetic leadership" for the Library Collection Space Planning Initiative.

UCSB Library Will Be Closed on Friday (March 29)

The UCSB Library will be closed on Friday, March 29 for César Chávez Day.  This includes Davidson Library, the Arts Library, and the Overnight Study Service.

Davidson Library will reopen on Saturday, March 30 at 9 am.  The Arts Library will reopen on Monday, April 1 at 9 am.

April Fool's Comics Competition Submissions Being Accepted

From the Sunday comics pages to "The Avengers," from "Tin Tin" to "Naruto," sequential art has had a major influence on cultures across the globe. To celebrate the Ninth Art, all students, alumni, faculty, staff, and nearby residents are invited to participate in the first ever April Fool's Comics Competition. The grand finalist will have their work added to the shelves of the UCSB Library.

Overnight Study

Need Some Peace and Quiet?

The higher floors in Davidson Library (floors 5-8) are designated "Quiet Floors".  In addition, there are other spaces in Davidson Library which are designated as "very quiet".  Cell phones, laptops, and talking are not allowed in these rooms.

Eighth Floor

The entire 8th floor has been designated a “cell phone-free zone.”  In addition, the Pacific View Room on the north end of the building is also quiet study space.

Arts Library

There is also lots of quiet study space in the Arts Library.

Looking for a Place to Work With a Group?

Check out the Group Commons room in Davidson Library!   The room is located on the first floor of Davidson Library, in-between the back entrance to the library and the central elevators.

This room is designed for groups to work together, so it is OK to talk with each other.

If you are looking for a quiet place to study, please try the designated Quiet Study Room on the 2nd floor, or the quiet study floors (5th-8th). Posters have been put up indicating quiet study floors and group/talking areas.
