What’s In the Wyles Collection: Non-Book Materials
Summer 1997
On display were a selection of non-book materials covering the Civil War, Westward Expansion, and the Gold Rush in California and Alaska. The formats ranged from original Civil War sheet music, broadsides, photographs, and various Civil War artifacts such as a union cap and Lincoln’s life mask, stamps and currency to maps and artist sketches of life during the Gold Rush.
“What’s In the Wyles Collection: Non-Book Materials” were on display in Special Collections in the Davidson Library through November 4, 1997.

Art Through the Mail: The Eternal Network

Correspondence Art, Arte Postale, Post-Kunst — however it’s named, it’s all Mail Art. As an art form, Mail Art puts hundreds of artists in contact with each other in a way that is direct, global, de-centralized and inexpensive.
Dressing the Text: The Fine Press Artists’ Book
Fall 1996
The Department of Special Collections’ current exhibit, Dressing the Text: The Fine Press Artists’ Book, is a traveling exhibit co-sponsored by the Art Museum of Santa Cruz County and the Printers’ Chappel of Santa Cruz, with support from the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County. The exhibition showcases 48 outstanding examples of work produced by fine press printers and book artists from across the United States during the past decade.
The UCSB Campus: From Schoolhouse to University

In the summer of 1996 the Department of Special Collections presented the exhibit entitled, “The UCSB Campus: From Schoolhouse to University.” The focus of the display was on the physical development of the Goleta campus, but also included the earlier campuses.
