Buy Your Tickets Now for Rain Man (Jan. 30)

The first big UCSB Reads event is coming up on Wednesday, January 30 at 7pm with a screening of the classic film, "Rain Man," followed by a Q&A with screenwriter, Barry Morrow. The Dustin Hoffman character in the film is based on a real person that Joshua Foer writes about in "Moonwalking with Einstein," the UCSB Reads 2013 selection. Lynn and Bob Koegel from UCSB's Koegel Autism Center will offer a 10 minute introduction to the movie, putting this 25th anniversary screening of "Rain Man" and our cultural understanding of autism in context.

Library to Host California Map Society

The Map & Imagery Lab will play host to a twice-annual meeting of the California Map Society on Saturday, February 2nd.  CMS meets twice yearly, once in Northern California and once in the South.

Who Freed the Slaves?: Emancipation as a Social Movement (Special Collections, Third Floor)

Wyles collection etchingOn January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation became law.  Conceived as a pragmatic measure to hasten the end of a bloody civil war, the Proclamation declared millions of slaves to be “forever free.”  Americans naturally identify this momentous event with Abraham Lincoln, who became widely known as “The Great Emancipator.” 

Weekdays at Noon: Live Radio Reading of Selections from Moonwalking With Einstein

Tune into KCSB-FM 91.9 weekdays at noon as campus and community volunteers read excerpts from the UCSB Reads 2013 book selection, Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer.  The readings will also be streamed live on the station's website at http://www.kcsb.org.

Sustainability and Repurposing Are Key Features of UCSB Library Expansion Project

LEED logo(Winter 2013) – A major renovation of the UCSB Library is slated to begin this spring, and when completed, the redesigned library — located in the heart of campus — will be a rich and unprecedented resource for the university and for a new generation of scholars.

UCSB Reads Book Giveaway a Big Success

Half an hour before the book giveaway was set to begin, hundreds of students lined the hall of the Library waiting to receive their copy of Moonwalking With Einstein, this year's UCSB Reads selection.  Chancellor Henry Yang and his wife Dilling Yang, Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas, University Librarian Denise Stephens, and Associated Students Vice President Mayra Segovia joined library staff to hand out free copies of the book.  Throughout the day students came into the library to get copies until all 2,000 copies were distributed.

UCSB Reads 2013 Kicks Off This Thursday

Chancellor Henry Yang and wife Dilling Yang, Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas, University Librarian Denise Stephens, and Associated Students Vice President Mayra Segovia will distribute free copies of this year's UCSB Reads books to students in Davidson Library this Thursday, January 10 at 10am. The book is Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer. UCSB Reads will continue throughout the winter quarter with film screenings, panel discussions, an author talk and other thought-provoking public programs.
