Origami cranes in grassThe UCSB Library is supporting efforts to collect materials (including the origami cranes at left) related to the Isla Vista tragedy on May 23, 2014, when six UCSB students were killed. During fall 2014, undergraduate students Megan Zuchowski, Lauren Trujillo, Elizabeth Dang, and Kaley Jorgensen, as well as UCSB alumna Maggie Cazares worked with History Professor Ann Marie Plane, graduate student Melissa Barthelemy, and UCSB Librarian Annie Platoff to scan items that will be part of the Library’s Special Research Collections. The students also did independent study projects related to community response to violence and trauma. The ongoing project, which involves students, administrators and faculty across campus, continues during the winter and spring quarters, with the Library offering expertise and support to two history courses in which students will gather and process information and materials for the special memorial collection: Advanced Historical Literature—Oral History, taught by Professor Stephan Miescher, and Directed Reading and Research in Public History, taught by Plane.
