MIL's collection contains material in a variety of formats. Some of these materials may be checked out on a limited loan basis. Users must comply with the "Conditions for Use of MIL Materials." Aerial photography and materials from MIL's Reference collections do not circulate.
A current UCSB Student Access card or Library card is required to check out circulating materials.
Faculty, graduate students and staff members may check out circulating maps for up to 3 days. Undergraduates may check out maps for meetings or presentations and materials must be returned the same day. Reproduction options are available both through MIL and through outside sources. See our Reproductions Options page.
Circulation of maps is considered a "Special Loan". Maps are checked out at the MIL service desk. Please return maps directly to MIL.
Books includes atlases, gazetteers, and manuals related to geo-spatial data. Most of this collection circulates and check out is done at the Library's Circulation Desk. Books are returned to the Library's book drops.
Aerial photography and satellite imagery does not circulate. There are several different options for reproduction of non-copyrighted frames; see our Aerial Photography Reproduction page for options.
MIL maintains a collection of geospatial data in digital form, both in CD/DVD format and online. CDs/DVDs circulate for a limited loan period of 7 days; they are checked out from BOTH the MIL service desk and the main Circulation Desk. You may use any of the Library's book drops to return CDs/DVDs.
Interlibrary loans are generally from UC map library to UC map library. MIL’s materials sent out on interlibrary loan are, with the exception of CDs/DVDs, for in-house use only. MIL collects materials collaboratively with Stanford University and the other University of California map libraries.
