American Library Association Annual Conference
San Francisco, CA, 14-20 June 2001

Although many meetings and programs I attended were very worthwhile, I would like to highlight two special ones. The ACRL conference program featured Sherman Alexie, speaking about The Creative Genius of Community. He also read some of his artistic works. He is a gifted author, poet, screenwriter, and Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian from Washington state. He also distributed copies of one of his poems to all attendees and autographed for those who asked him to. His presentation was Monday, 18 June at 2 pm. He gave us a glimpse into how people in urban and rural communities interact with libraries and education. His web address is: http://www.fallsapart.com/

Also, the ACRL Anthropology and Sociology Section sponsored a Mural Walk in the Mission District of San Francisco.  Precita Eyes is the artistic group that offers guided walks, composes and provides murals in local communities, and conducts art courses in mural appreciation and design for people of all ages.  We learned to trace murals from early times to contemporary styles and themes. The Mexican influence has been significant in both Southern and Northern California. The mural walk took place on Tuesday morning beginning on 24th Street.
