green bullet  Library Logo Unveiled
Library LogoResolving a common a need for a UCSB Libraries logo, Rich Ayling, a campus graphics designer, worked with the Library to produce a simple design that could be used in a variety of situations.  Rich created a number of versions of the logo in several file formats and sizes so that they can be used in both Web and graphics print design.  For staff producing library Web pages, our library Webservant, Chuck Huber, has added copies of the gif versions to the Library Image Gallery at: http://www.library.ucsb.edu/dolphin/webstuff/gallery.html.

Jane and her creationThe first place it was displayed to the public was at the Summer Sessions Ice Cream Social, an information/orientation opportunity for summer students new to campus.  Jane Faulkner (AKA the "Martha Stewart of the Library") sewed a banner which hung from the Library table. Click on Jane's photo to see more of the Summer Sessions event.

green bullet Historical Maps in Special Collections Exhibit
The Department of Special Collections, which houses rare printed and manuscript maps dating from the 1500s, exhibited some of them during August and September.  The John Maximus Memorial Collection of Early Printed Maps, with 16th-18th century maps by world renowned cartographers such as Gerhard Mercator and Joan Blaeu, is our largest and most significant collection.  The William Wyles Collection also contains a number of 19th century maps relating to the Civil War, exploration in North America, and westward expansion.  The Rare Books section likewise contains many notable traveler's narratives, which oftentimes include related maps.  In addition to the maps themselves, Special Collections also houses related books on the history of maps, cartography, and cartographers.

green bullet Cylinder Reproducer Restoration Completed
antique cylinderTom and Virginia Hawthorn of Hawthorn's Antique Audio in Roseville, California, recently were at the library to finish the year-long restoration project of the library's collection of antique cylinder reproducers in the Todd collection. The collection includes a representative sample of historic machines from the peak of the wax cylinder's popularity from the late 19th century to about 1910. The machines had to be cleaned, the works repaired and missing parts replaced. Each machine is a working and historically accurate example of a particular model. UCSB's collection of 7000 cylinder recording is the 3rd largest collection in the country. We now have both historic and modern equipment for the playback of cylinders.  Photographs documenting the restoration of an Edison Model D phonograph from 1908, which plays both 2- and 4-minute cylinders, can be seen through this link.

* purple Reports from ALA
This past June, many UCSB librarians and staff found their way to the corridors of San Francisco's Moscone Center for the Annual Meeting of the American Library Association.  Several of our UCSB folk were involved in presentations and special meetings and share some comments in the links that follow.  Others were a bit too humble and we had to rely on their colleague's reports:
* purple Library Provides Union Leadership
Following a successful election, Coalition of University Employees (CUE) Local #1 has been putting several of our library employees to work at both the local and state level.  Joanne Murray, who helped negotiate CUE's first contract and will continue in her capacity as an alternate, has begun serving as the local's Vice President. Jack Joshua was elected to the Bargaining Team and has been attending sessions every other week to negotiate improvements to the current contract. Alyce Harris is the newly elected Election Appeals Panelist and will serve on a panel charged with investigating and ruling on any election challenges throughout the state.
* purple Never Too Old To Start
Never having gotten to take dance lessons as a child, Renata Hundley found an adult beginner ballet class three years ago and added tap and jazz lessons as her confidence grew.  In honor of her 50th year on the planet, she increased her class and rehearsal hours and got to perform in a dance concert in July
* purple Summer Solstice Celebration Tees
When she wasn't busily working on our Pegasus and other library Web pages, Margaret Rankin was busily organizing sales of this year's Summer Solstice Celebration tee-shirts.  She got some of our library folks to help sell the shirts along the parade route. Take a look at some photos of the Parade from their vantage point . . .

green bullet Want Apricots? How About Bees!
bee swarmThe bees arrived a day or two before July 4th. I had heard the buzzing as I was cleaning up around the apricot tree - and in fact had been working within a couple feet of the swarm - but I did not realize they were there till the morning of the 4th.
