green bullet Mary Larsgaard Article Published in Library Journal

The World at Your Fingertips: Map Resources was published inLibrary Journal's  July 1999 issue.  The article on geography reference tools was written by Mary Larsgaard, Assistant Head of the Map & Imagery Lab.   It includes information for reference works such as atlases, dictionaries, distances, gazetteers, geographic information systems, maps, and remote-sensing images.  Mary's article is part of  LJ's 12-part collection development series which can be used to build a core collection.

Several library folks were involved in the Santa Barbara News-Press's first ever Book and Author Festival on Saturday, September 18, at De La Guerra Plaza.  UCSB was one of the official sponsors of the event, hosting the Poetry Corner, with poets doing readings throughout the day. Lynne Hayman, Sarah Prichard, Sally Wilson Weimer, Nerea Llamas, Janet Martorana and Gary Colmenar helped staff a booth where several UCSB authors were signing and displaying books.  The event was a benefit for the Computers For Families organization.

purple bulletCalifornia State Library Awards LSTA Grant to UCSB Library

The library has been awarded a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant to catalog over 5,000 maps held in the Map and Imagery Laboratory (MIL) and in Special Collections. One of the collections, called the Maximus Collection contains maps of the Earth or portions of it from 16th century to the 18th century. Maps from the Wyles Collection will also be included. Iaddition, maps of California and topographic map series for the U.S. and for foreign countries, all of which are housed in MIL, will be cataloged as part of this project. While a total of 5,360 titles will be cataloged as part of this project, we anticipate that many more maps will be made accessible because for each title there are as many as 150 individual maps. Mary Larsgaard wrote the grant application and will administer the project.

purple bulletCorporate Scheduling and Time (CS&T) is coming the library

 A new calendaring software has been adopted by the campus, and the library will soon be making it available to all employees. Staff in the Map and Imagery Laboratory have been using it for sometime and will be providing training in its use. CS&T allows scheduling of groups and of resources, such as conference rooms or equipment, and gives the user the ability to see when other members of the group are available. One can view their own schedule by the day, the week or the month. The software also provides a place to maintain lists of tasks to be completed. To learn more about CS&T you may go to a CS&T help site at http://www.cst.ca/weblink/index.htm or to the user's manual at http://www.alexandria.ucsb.edu/~philpot/cstmanual, or to an FAQ page at http://www.cst.ca/Partners/Consulting-Edu/client-faq.html.

Look for announcements of training sessions.

* Building Update
moving van

 There are several building projects happening this year in Davidson Library. We will be expanding some public services points and creating two new service areas. Most of the projects will begin this fall and be completed during early 2000.  (This moving van removed a number of the Reference Index tables in order to make room for the new short shelving and InfoStations in the Main Reference Area.)  Click on the van to read about other planned changes.
