Be sure to say "hello and welcome" to the following people who joined
the library's personnel roster in December:
- December 7 - Cecile Brown, LA II in Serials.
Cecile had been working for the UCSB Bookstore as a book receiving manager
and before that as an office manager at Planned Parenthood. She will be
working in the Serials cataloging section.

Sandy comes from Arkansas State University where she was a reference

MORE about Sandy
- December 18 - Florence Sanches, LA II in Special

Florence just moved from Kokomo, Indiana, "back" home to Santa Barbara. She
worked at Indiana University in the Library and in Alumni Relations. She

Professional & Outside Activities
A Note of Thanks To Concerned Staff
Rik Cupal received the following letter after a one-week appeal
to the library:

Concerned Staff
Davidson Library
University of California
Santa Barbara, CA 93106
Dear Library Staff:
On behalf of all of those you have helped with your wonderful generosity, we
at Direct Relief extend our most sincere thanks. The devastation of Hurricane
Mitch is enormous and much of the population of Nicaragua and Honduras are victims.
Your financial assistance will enable us to provide critically needed medical
supplies to heal people and prevent further disease. Many many people will be
assisted due to your kindness and for this you should be proud. The UCSB Library
staff is obviously a "concerned" and responsive group of fine people. Thank you.
Sincerely yours,
Max P. Goff

Memo From Chancellor Yang
We are extremely pleased with the appointment of Sarah M. Pritchard as our new
University Librarian. . .
Library Holiday Party Attended by Record Number
The Holiday Celebration on December 15th, was attended by a record number of
library employees: 42 staff, 30 students and 22 librarians resulting in 94
attendees (and 94 white elephants). Cost of the
Holiday Affair remained at $5.00 each for a selection of Chinese food from
Panda Express, a cream cake from Hennings, and orange punch.
The RBS student crew (with Rob Crew) decorated and arranged the seating
using all areas of the staff room. Mary Larsgaard, Sal Guerena, and Carol
Gibbens handled the gifts and cultural diversity information. Chris Palacio
arranged for a delicious sheet cake (half yellow with strawberry filling,
half chocolate with vanilla). Sherry DeDecker and Pat Dawson artfully
distributed the 94 gifts.

Thoreau Edition Receives Gifts
The Writings of Henry D. Thoreau, (the Thoreau Edition),
based in the
Davidson Library, recently received a gift of $20,000 from the National
Trust for the Humanities. This gift, which was received on December 15,
1998, is eligible for a matching amount from the National Endowment for
the Humanities (NEH) as part of the Editions' 1997-99 NEH grant. The
National Trust Funds were made available from the Barkley Fund. (The
Edition was the recipient of a $10,000 gift from the National Trust in
December 1997; that gift was matched by NEH). The Edition received
another December 1998 gift - $1,000 from a private donor. That gift is also
eligible for matching.
United Way Campaign Begins
The 1999 UCSB United Way campaign is now getting under way. This is a
wonderful (and convenient!) opportunity for UCSB employees to help support
the many local health and human service agencies that serve our community.
The United Way Network for Caring can distribute your donation to over 70
service programs throughout south Santa Barbara County. Or you can choose
the "Isla Vista-UCSB Connection" to support IV and UCSB organizations such
as the University Children's Center and Isla Vista Youth Projects, among
others. Or you have the option of targeting your donation to any
charitable agency that you consider most important. The choice is yours.
You will soon be receiving a packet containing United Way information and
pledge cards. Instructions on completing the pledge card are included in
your packet. You can donate through payroll deduction or make a one-time
gift. Please note that if you are currently giving through payroll
deduction and do not return your card, your deduction will continue.
Please return your pledge card by February 12 to the Library Personnel
Office or mail it directly to Accounting & Financial Services.
