green bullet New Library Exhibits Committee Presents Slugs, Shockers and Stereotypes
exhibit titleThe new Library Exhibits Committee launched their first exhibit in January.  This committee is tasked with creating exhibits for the cases in the first-floor hallway.

Their first exhibit is entitled Slugs, Shockers, and Stereotypes:  a Look at College Mascots.  Five cases introduce the viewer to the mascot phenomenon.  Topics covered include the mascots of the University of California campuses, different looks of the UCSB Gaucho over time, unusual mascots, and issues facing some colleges and universities about their mascots.  Three issues are examined - trademarks, live mascots, and the controversy about the use of Native American mascots.

The Committee has developed a schedule of exhibit topics that will change every two months.  Members include Anna DeVore, Cristina Clarke, Gary Colmenar, Jane Faulkner, Kristen LaBonte, and Annie Platoff.  Questions and comments can be addressed to Annie, the Committee Chair.

Be sure to spend some time looking at the exhibit on the First Floor, Central.
Click on this photo to see the committee as they developed and assembled the exhibit.

green bullet Orange Counter Turned White
While we are in the planning stage of a new library building, the Davidson Library's dated decor continues to undergo continuous makeovers.  A new counter top has been installed outside the door to the Information Services offices. Little by little, the remaining "Sixties orange" decorating details are being replaced with elements that are bringing us into the Twenty-first Century.

Tree planting in the Community

Garden

Since Peter Shapiro was an integral part of the Greenhouse and Garden Project at UCSB, a fruit tree planting and plot dedication in celebration of his life was held on Sunday, January 19th.  (There will be a separate ceremonial tree planting on the main campus at a later date.)  More photos can be viewed by clicking on the one here.  More can be learned about the Greenhouse and Garden Project through this link: http://orgs.sa.ucsb.edu/ghgp/

purple Old Library Annex Razed
Annex used between 1975-1979

You are looking at the demolition of the old Marine barracks near the Biology buildings.  Before the 4th addition of the library, large runs of periodicals were stored in Building 478, right next to parking Lot 7 (under the rows of eucalyptus trees).  Now a new bio-science building is being constructed and the old Marine buildings are coming down.  Click on the photo to see more.

purple Oak Tree Recovers from Worm Infestation

What a difference a season makes!

Our cork oak (Quercus Suber), planted by Paul Lopez, is now back to vibrant green health.  The effect of those pesky caterpillars and their webs are no longer evident.  The oak is sporting new growth and seems quite content.

The Cork Oak was not disturbed when the 4th addition to the library was constructed.  Perhaps that is one of the reasons the building has an octagonal shape.
