From the Northfield News . . .McCann, who is originally from Rhode Island, moved west as a child and spent most of his life in California. He most recently worked in the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) school library. The new Administrative Assistant came to Vermont in July of 1998 when his wife Christine was offered a teaching position in the History Department at Norwich University. The couple currently reside on Central Street.
McCann's job description is varied and very long. Among other things, he is responsible for writing and posting municipal meeting agendas and warnings, preparing meeting minutes for distribution, assembling weekly information packets for the Village Trustees and Selectboard members, and typing correspondence for the Municipal Manager and the Superintendent of Public Works. He also answers phones, sorts mail, and handles personnel files in the municipal offices. In the near future he will help prepare annual reports, and work on a municipal website.
McCann said that, when he and his wife are not working, they enjoy exploring different areas of Vermont and New Hampshire. "New England is very different from California," he said. "In Santa Barbara, where we lived, we were right on the ocean. It's really quite beautiful here." McCann noted that he enjoys many of the benefits of living in a small town. "It's great to be able to walk to the post office or store to get what you need," he said. "This job is helping me to become familiar with the town and the people of Northfield. My wife and I are very happy here."
