green bullet Martorana and Doyle Have Hand In All That Glitters

A book chapter by Janet Martorana and former Davidson Library librarian, Carol Doyle, was recently published in the book, All That Glitters: Prospecting for Information in the Changing Library World.  The book was edited by Steven Vincent and Sue K. Norman and published by JAI Press Inc., in Stamford, Connecticut late last year.  According to the book abstract, the chapter,  Evaluation Workout: Exercises and Techniques to Teach Critical Thinking About Web Resources, "identifies problems caused by the Web environment which can be alleviated by the application of critical thinking concepts to Web information resources.  Various types of activities in UCSB's instruction program are described, all of which contain some aspect of evaluation.  Examples of evaluative exercises and techniques are provided."

Come put art in your lunch and join us for the next "Diversity Brown Bag Lunch" slated for Wednesday, February 16 from noon to 1 pm.  Bring your own lunch and find out about the wondrous, colorful world of Chicano silkscreen print art of the renowned Self-Help Graphics in East Los Angeles.  KCET's short video "Life and Times" on Self-Help Graphics will be shown.  Sal Guerena will show and discuss several of their prints held in the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives. purple bullet Library Ergonomics Task Force Continues Developing Webpage

The Davidson Library's Ergonomics Task Force has completed the initial work on the Library's Ergonomics Web Page. Many thanks to Bruce Machado and Chuck Huber for assisting the group in getting the page ready to load! The page can be found at: http://www.library.ucsb.edu/committees/ergonomics/ergonomics.html.  Please take a look and let them know if there are features you would like to see included as the page is revised and updated.  An ongoing feature to be included in each issue of the Library Waves is the "Ergonomics Tip of the Month".  The first "tip" appeared in the November 1999 issue. This month's "Deskercise Break" (from the Johns Hopkins Health Information page) can be found by clicking on the link: http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH?t=8254&st=408.  While you are there, please take a moment to look at some of the ergo topics that are presented at the site. If you wish to send comments to the members that comprise the Ergonomics Task Force, you can direct them to: ergo@library.ucsb.edu.

purple bullet New Chiller Unit Installed

Last month, after pipes were installed under UCEN and Eucalyptus Roads, the cooling unit that has been sitting behind the library for the past months was hoisted into the air and installed under the Davidson Library.  This unit will cool water which will flow through the newly-installed pipes and will cool the Library as well as several adjacent buildings.  Work will continue until the predicted completion date in late February. *Remember When . . .
1987

It was 1987 and a library newsletter printed a photo of Duane Anderson and some students at the Loan Desk checking out in a NEW way.  "Just take your library card and the circulating materials . . . thanks to laser pen and computer technology, you need not fill out check-out slips to borrow library material."
