Announcements & Reports
Early English Books Online Presented to
Campus Community
On November 9th and 10th, the Library celebrated the acquisition of the Early English Books Online with a reception and special training sessions. This searchable database includes a collection of over 96,000 titles from the first book published in English through the age of Spenser and Shakespeare. The reception was held in the McCune Room of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building and Professor Patricia Fumerton of the English Department spoke. Nerea Llamas, English Collection specialist, coordinated the reception which was co-sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center. Drop-in training sessions were offered at four different times and presented by personnel from Bell & Howell.
Reference Area Research InfoStations
During November, the Main Reference Area did quite a bit of moving. The old Government Publications card catalog was moved away from the windows, the Index tables were removed and a new Index Area was created with short shelving, and 12 new Research InfoStations were installed. By Winter 2000 these InfoStations will be fully operational as extra CD-ROM stations and stations where researchers will be able to spend more one-on-one time with the reference librarians.
Current Exhibits in the Library
The Department of Special Collections is currently displaying the 1998 Western Books Exhibition. This 57th Annual travelling exhibit is sponsored by the Rounce & Coffin Club of Los Angeles.
The exhibit showcases 24 outstanding examples of works produced by fine press printers and book artists using a wide variety of styles. Some of the presses include: The Bancroft Library Press, Bullnettle Press, Mesa Arts Press and the Scripps College Press. Many of the selections have special binding, hand painted pages, carved woodcut, unique printed letterpress as well as books designed with computer digital technology.
The exhibit will be on display through December 30, 1999.
