Stanford/Oxford Alliance Enhances E-Journal Accessibility

Leading academic publisher Oxford University Press (OUP) is transferring responsibility for the production and hosting of its growing corpus of online journals to HighWire Press, the electronic imprint of Stanford University Libraries.

Ten biomedical journals will be transferred at the beginning of 1999 (Brain, Carcinogenesis, Health Education Research, Human Reproduction, International Immunology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Molecular Human Reproduction, Mutagenesis, Neurocase, and Protein Engineering).  Responsibility for the balance of OUP's online journals will gradually be transferred to HighWire over the next two years.  By the end of 1999 OUP expects to have a total of some 85 journals online, of which some 34 will have moved to HighWire and will be available in both HTML and PDF formats.

"Our hopes and plans for HighWire's growth are based on working with the best scholarly publications - those that genuinely contribute to the advancement of knowledge - and we are thus delighted to inaugurate the partnership with OUP," says Michael A. Keller, Stanford University Librarian and Publisher of HighWire Press.  HighWire Director, John Sack, adds: "The OUP journals complement the range of high-impact journals now online through HighWire; with cross-linking among all these journals, the online environment will be far richer and more productive for the working researcher and scholar."

Henry Reece, Secretary to the Delegates and Chief Executive, OUP, comments: "Oxford University Press has always been at the forefront of journals publishing and many of its journals are already available online.  This strategic alliance with HighWire Press will enable us to expand our online publishing programme and contribute to improving the dissemination of information to researchers and scholars world-wide."

An enterprise unit of the Stanford University Libraries located on the university campus, HighWire Press is the pre-eminent producer and distributor of electronic journals in the academic world, currently producing over 90 top international e-journals in the fields of science, technology, and medicine.  Its advanced methodology offers added links among authors, articles and citations; advanced searching capabilities; high-resolution images and multimedia; and interactivity, providing additional dimensions to the information provided in print journals.
