Thanksgiving was a welcome break in a very busy quarter. Many
of us would agree that the selection process for the University Librarian has
been a stimulating and hopeful activity for all who have participated. As the quarter winds
down to a close, and the holidays bring us to the end of 1998, we continue the
UL search process and look forward to coming changes within the library in 1999.

Personnel Announcements
Be sure to say "hello and welcome" to the following people who have joined
the library's personnel roster in November:
- October 30 - Melissa Phelan, started as an LA II in
Circulation-Stack/Serial/GP
Services. She is in charge of the unit's operations during the weekends
and holidays. Melissa graduated from UCSB with a BA in English/German and
was a student assistant in Stack Services (so she knows what she's getting
into!). Welcome back, Melissa!
- November 11 - Todd Chatman started as an LA III in
Special Collections-CEMA. He
assists in the organization and preservation of CEMA's archival
collections and is also the primary computer specialist for the office.
Todd has been an editor and writer for a number of publications and also a
trip leader for a travel company.
- November 23 - Lorraine Padilla transferred from a
full-time LA II in CatalAcq to a
half-time position in the Receiving unit in Serials.
She has been doing copy cataloging and providing secretarial support for
the CatalAcq office. We will find her in both departments through December
(you go, girl!) while a replacement is being sought for the CatalAcq
vacancy. We hope you will enjoy the change, Lorraine!
November 30 - We said goodbye to Kim Thompson and Marilyn
Cordray.
- Kim, who
was head of the Serials Order Section in Serials, has transferred to
the UCSB Foundation, where she will be an accounting assistant. She has
served 14 years in the Library.
- Marilyn, who has served
nearly 5 years as
the Reference Department's secretary, transferred as the
administrative assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Institutional
Advancement (or, as Marilyn puts it, she will be "the AA for the VC of
IA"). The Library will sorely miss these two terrific employees and wish
them the best in their continuing careers.

Professional & Outside Activities
Latino Periodicals: A Selection
Guide Just Published
Salvador Guerena co-authored and edited Latino
Periodicals
(Mcfarland Publishers, 1998), a new collection development tool for
librarians who
need information on Latino periodicals suitable for public, school and
academic libraries. The nearly 300 titles, which are described and
evaluated by specialists, include general interest and popular magazines,
newspapers, fotonovelas and newsletters that will appeal to
Spanish-speaking, bilingual and English-speaking library patrons, as well
as the more specialized journals appropriate for the larger public and
academic libraries. The entries are arranged by subject or type of
publication. Title and topic indexes are provided and an appendix gives
addresses for vendors and distributors.
Thoreau Presented to Local Teachers
Elizabeth Witherell, Editor-in-Chief of The Writings of
Henry D. Thoreau,
which is located in Davidson Library, presented an illustrated talk about
Henry D. Thoreau's use of drawings in his Journal to local elementary and
high school teachers at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on November 12th.
Tarte a la Creme: Comedy and Gastronomy in Moliere's Theater
Included in Must-Have Book List
An October 29th New York Times article on what can be found in
cookbook sections of today's better bookstores included Ron
Tobin's "plunge into deep culinary esoterica". According to Martin
Arnold, the
article's author, this Ohio State University Press book must be so popular
that although it costs $42.50, it is on back order.

Patron Initiated Request Project Announces Website
Since there was unanimous support for a Website that would be a single
source for materials related to the background and implementation of PIR,
that site is now available at:
http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/pir/.
The site is intended for the use of UC Library staff who are involved with
or interested in the PIR project. The site contains background information,
descriptive summaries of the status and history of PIR, technical
information about the project such as the decision flow programmed into
receiving and forwarding a request, and links to vendor information
including OCLC Direct.
Most of the documents on the site are available in Rich Text Format (RTF)
which nearly any word processing program can read. Some files are available
in HTML or PDF/Acrobat form as well.

Q: People have commented on how nice the Library Waves dolphin
logo looks; who drew it and where did it come from?
A:"The Library Waves logo came from a combination of sources.
Once we had decided on the name, I wanted to find some art work that would
relate to oceans or waves. I have a subscription to a service called Art
Today http://www.arttoday.com/
that provides a wide variety of
royalty-free clip art. I found an image with dolphins playing in the waves
that I liked so I downloaded it.
Then I used Paintshop Pro to make some changes to the art. The original
image had three dolphins and was rather large. I cut out two of the
dolphins and changed the shape, adding a curve at the top. I also
lightened up the image since the original was quite bright, and resized it
to come up with a size that would work for the newsletter. I added the text
using a font called Sunbelt that I had also obtained from Art Today.
Putting those pieces together resulted in the Library Waves logo"
