| The UCSB Libraries Department of Special
Collections presents a special exhibit celebrating the 50th anniversary
of the library building. The groundbreaking for the original library building
took place on September 20, 1952. The building was completed in 1954, and
in that year, UCSB moved from its campuses on the Riviera and the Mesa
to Goleta Point. The library was the first university building to be constructed
on the Goleta campus, which was formerly occupied by a Marine Corp Air
Station.
The library building was designed under
the direction of former University Librarian Donald Davidson. As UCSB became
a major research university, the library expanded its collections and facilities
to respond to the needs of the students and faculty. Within a few years,
the library outgrew the original building, and Davidson began an ambitious
program of expansion which saw the addition of three new building units
between 1962 and 1977. Each unit reflected a radical departure in architectural
design due to changing needs and contemporary styles.
The exhibit will be on display from September
13 - November 15, 2002, in the Special Collections Department, located
on the third floor of the Davidson Library. The Special Collections Department
is open to the public Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.,
and Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. For information about the exhibit, please
