green bullet  Latest CDL Release Result of Lucia Snowhill's Involvement

In keeping with the goal of establishing semi-annual releases of new features and enhancements to the California Digital Library, the second release of the CDL became available on July 7, 1999.

In an emailed listserv message, the CDL expressed it's appreciation "of the many constructive comments from library staff and patrons -- given via focus group sessions, the Digital Library Strategies Forums, feedback forms and email, and campus presentations" that contributed to the enhancements. Particular appreciation was given to the design and implementation team members "who deserve congratulations for the enormous work involved". Included in this group were Brian Warling, Lynne Grigsby-Standfill, Margery Tibbetts, Tony Toyofuku, Sherry Willhite, Claudia Woo, Jayne Dickson, Nancy Gusack, and Lucia Snowhill.

In the July 13, 1999 issue of CDLINFO Newsletter http://www.cdlib.org/news/cdlinfo/, the Web-based newsletter of the California Digital Library, Lucia received another accolade:

The CDL would like to thank Lucia Snowhill, UCSB Librarian, for her enormous contribution to the conversion of the RLG and OCLC Z39.50 databases to the Web interface (RLG: Anthropological Literature, Avery Index to Architecture Periodicals, Chicano, ESTC, HSCI, and RLIN Bibliographic File; OCLC: ArtAbstracts, MLA, and WorldCat; Stanford: GeoRef). For the past two years Lucia has helped CDL staff translate each database from Telnet into Web format. She has advised our programmers and worked with our Digital Library Services staff, providing all the details of the search functions that users need to see. She has tried to maintain consistency between the Telnet and Web versions of each database, despite the obvious differences in the user/system interfaces. She has proofed and corrected our pages and pages of documentation with unflagging energy, and has clarified our tasks. And she has tried to satisfy all the particular requests of the various advisory committees to make each database as completely functional as possible in our interface. We simply could not have completed the task without her."

We all owe Lucia a big round of thanks!

purple bullet  An Invitation To Join AIDS Walk '99

The 1999 AIDS Walk is scheduled for Saturday, October 2. It begins at Leadbetter Beach and walkers will go about halfway up through Shoreline Park before turning around and heading to Milpas along Cabrillo Blvd. We turn around again at Milpas and return to Leadbetter Beach: 10K. The Walk usually begins around 9:00 or 9:30 a.m.

Just want to open up the Pet Sitters of Santa Barbara team to any interested library workers (I think there were 6 or so library people on the team last year, some with their spouses/partners). The team consists of PS of SB clients, library folks, friends and family. Pets are welcome to walk as long as they are up for 10K and their people have them on a leash and bring plenty of water for them. I'll supply a PS of SB t-shirt for each walker. Each walker who individually raises $150 or more also receives an AIDS Walk t-shirt. Last year our team raised just over $2100.

There will be pre-walk munchies and drinks and an aerobic workout to get walkers ready. There is usually post-walk entertainment as well. All of this is provided by the Pacific Pride Foundation and other major sponsors of the walk.

If anyone is intersted in joining us they can call my office at 682-2822, email me or just drop by and see me. I should have buttons, sponsor sheets and other info in mid-August. I'd be happy to chat with anyone interested; they can see me at the Loan Desk.

I've been involved in the AIDS Walk every year since its inception--either as an individual walker or the captain of a team. It's a fun atmosphere where a lot of work gets done for a worthy cause. Walkers definitely feel like they've done a good thing.

blue bullet  Storke Tower Open House Uses Special Collections Photos

Storke Tower On Sunday, July 18th, Visiting University Carillonist, Margo Halsted, hosted an open house of Storke Tower and the Thomas M. Storke Carillon. Visitors were able to take the elevator to the top of the tower and observe Professor Halstead as she played the instrument and talked about the bells. Copies of photographs from the Davidson Library's University Archives greeted the visitors as they entered the observation deck.

This past year, Prof. Halstead has been on sabbatical leave from the University of Michigan School of Music, where she presides over that university's two carillons. During her stay at UCSB, she oversaw the repair and refurbishing of the carillon mechanism, keyboard and playing cabin. A fund to maintain the instrument and to purchase carillon music has been established. Anyone wishing to support the UCSB Carillon Fund is invited to contact Nicole Kern, Office of Development, at 893-7680.

To see more photos and learn more about the Carillon, click on the tower.

blue bullet  AS Garden and Greenhouse Project Creates Small Oasis

Garden Project sign Many library visitors and employees have enjoyed Peter Shapiro's flowers over the years, but not many have seen where they are grown. The UCSB Garden and Greenhouse Project has had Peter as it's Advisor for the past ten years. Recent hire, Kristen LaBonte, has been the Garden Coordinator for the past 4 years. Peter, Kristen, and CatalAcq staffer, Lora Richards all have garden plots along with over 30 other gardeners. For a mere $10 per year, any student, staff or faculty member can cultivate a plot of land with water, manure and the use of tools for that land included in the price. The gardens are 100% organic and even boast 4 resident cats who apparently do an excellent job of keeping the gophers and mice away from the plants.

Visitors are welcome, but for a virtual look at the gardens, click on the sign.
