Summer Academy 2000 To Offer Variety of Classes
Library employees wishing to learn more about maximizing the use of their computers at work can still sign up for classes being offered from August 22 through September 15. Most classes have been filled, but anyone who has not yet signed-up should contact Judy Gorrindo or Detrice Bankhead. Classes in Excel, Internet searching and manuevering, Windows NT, Eudora Pro, Webpage composition, graphic layout and Powerpoint presentations are being taught for the most part by our own experts from within the library.
Working in partnership with the UCSB Bookstore, the Library will be offering an opportunity to purchase books written by UCSB writers, many of whom are scheduled to sign and discuss their books. Click on this link to see the list of featured books and the author schedule. More information about the Book Fest in general is available at http://www.newspress.com/bookfestival/Back to the top

When the starter's pistol went off at the ALA Fun Run/Walk in Chicago, not only was Jane Faulkner the only runner from UCSB, but she was also the only one from Santa Barbara. Having run in last year's Fun Run in New Orleans, she was a veteran of the race and ran off with a third place finish in her age category! Other Access Services staffers joining Jane at ALA (but not in the race) were Young Huh, Claudia Jimenez and Gary Johnson. Jane writes:
I think ALA's "Fun Run" was a misnomer; the humidity was as bad as it gets in Chicago, the wind by some fluke managed to be against us both ways, and it was HOT! There are some pretty impressive runners out there in the library community, a couple of whom compete at the national level, so I really had no business being out there among them. But the course itself was beautiful, taking us along Lakeshore Drive in the early morning while the fishing boats came in. And it was a treat to see the sun rising over the water's edge - a real change for a west-coaster. I placed third in my age group, and UCSB got a big round of applause when my name was mentioned, so we got a moment or two of glory. And did I mention that it was hot . . . ?

Sally Willson Weimer, ACRL ANSS Section Chair, conducted a brief business meeting after a very successful ALA Association of College and Research Librarians (ACRL), Anthropology and Sociology Section (ANSS) conference program during the ALA annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois. The conference program was entitled: Sociological and Anthropological Research in Transition: Trans-disciplinary Collaboration, Qualitative/Quantitative Rapprochement and was held on Sunday, July 9, 2000, 9:30am - 12:00pm. It focused on facilitating research efforts, collaboration, the International Social Survey program, and how librarians can work with social researchers to assist them in locating and using social and demographic data. The conference program announcement is located at http://www2.lib.udel.edu/udlib-srch/anss/.
The ANSS-sponsored tour of the Jane Addams Hull House took place Tuesday, July 12. Hull House is affiliated with and located on the University of Illinois at Chicago Campus. The tour was coordinated by Lynn C. Hattendorf Westney, a Reference Librarian at the U. of Illinois-Chicago Library. Several ACRL ANSS members, including Sally, attended the tour and are shown in the photo.

In an enthusiastic effort to streamline office practices, ILL has taken a dramatic step towards the elimination of almost half of its paper files. With a unanimous cheer, ILL staff members converged on Goleta Beach to hold a burning ceremony to mark their decision to go "paperless". As ILL observes strict recycling procedures, only a few token pieces of the paper files were actually burned. The rest were discreetly recycled after the ceremony.

This digitally enhanced photo doesn't quite get across the truly tacky nature of this plastic clock.
Even though it works, it's a good thing that we don't ALL have to look at it everyday!
(Thanks to a genuinely serendipitous find by John Vasi, this object d'art hangs in the office of
Pegasus programmer, Ana Fidler.
When Bronwen Lacey left to prepare for law school earlier this summer, the MIL staff planned the usual going-away party. But looking at the lemon meringue pie that he brought, Jason Simpson got the diabolical idea of throwing it in Bronwen's face! Being sensitive to other people's feelings, however, Jason asked permission first. Bronwen said "No way," and everyone agreed that the pie would be much better suited for eating. So what about filling a pie tin with whipped cream and throwing that in Bronwen's face? How about if they paid her? "Well, maybe." A collection was quickly made for the agreed upon amount and you can see the results through this link. Bronwen left $50 richer, everyone had a great laugh, and Jason had to change into a clean shirt when it was all over!Back to the top
