Committee on Professional Development (CPD)
Annual Report 1998-1999
The Committee on Professional Development (CPD) oversees professional travel and research by LAUC-SB members.
For 1998-99, CPD members were:
Nerea A.LLamas (chair), Lorna Lueck (chair-elect), Patrick Dawson (representative to LAUC Professional Development Committee), Chuck Huber and Jim Markham
Funding:
Funding for professional development in 1998-99 totaled $18,900. The basic allocation of $300 x 30 LAUC unit members was initially supplemented by a $5000 UCSB Library supplement and a $3000 One-time supplement from conference profits. The remaining $1900 stemmed from a one-time year-end supplement requested by CPD.
As four LAUC members left UCSB early in the year, their unspent professional development funds were re-distributed in February adding an additional $85 to the remaining LAUC members' funds. Similarly, in May, unused travel funds were re-distributed to LAUC members traveling in late May and June. The one-time year-end supplement was also distributed at that point to travelers who qualified for a per-diem day. With only 16 travelers qualifying, $300 was returned.
Travel Guidelines:
Travel guidelines were amended slightly to encourage professional development among librarians new to UCSB. During their first year at UCSB, new librarians are entitled to 3 days per diem regardless of committee or program involvement.
Reimbursement Rate:
The standard mileage rate decreased from $.325 to $.31 due to a change in Internal Revenue Service Regulations.
Research proposals:
There were two calls for research proposals. None were submitted from UCSB. CPD evaluated seven proposals and Patrick Dawson took the recommendations to the statewide Professional Development Committee. Total funding for five proposals was $26,600.
Update of web page:
CPD continues to maintain a web page. The web page reflects current travel guidelines, mileage chart, research proposal calendar and assorted travel links.
