Staff/Librarian programs
During 1997-1998, LAUC-SB sponsored programs for all library staff.
The programs with speakers were co-sponsored by the Program Committee and
Carol Doyle, Training Coordinator. Programs were:
December 9: Learning to Learn
Speaker: Laura Morgan, UCSB Human Resources Training and Development
March 11: Plerking in the Plerkplace: Perqs of Putting
Laughter and Play to Work
Speaker: Annette Goodheart, Ph.D.
Cost (paid by Library): $500
May 5: Staff Pizza Party
Hosted by the librarians; pizza money donated, librarians brought drinks,
salads. This party was very much appreciated by staff; would recommend
keeping this as an annual event in some form.
Publicity went out to the Library advertising the Plerking program
(l:/lauc/plerking.doc). The Learning to Learn program was advertised by
email to Library. Carol Doyle and I sent a letter to speakers, thanking them
for their participation.
The Committee developed a list of topics for future programs. This list, as
well as a list of campus contacts, is available at l:/lauc/progidea.doc.
Annual Conference: Customer Service Excellence
Held on May 22, 1998
This workshop, a LAMA institute, was led by Darlene Weingand, Professor and
Director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Library and
Information Studies Continuing Education Services. Cosponsors were LAUC-SB,
Friends of the UCSB Library, Black Gold Cooperative Library System and
TIE/Total Interlibrary Exchange Conference.
The $4,000 LAMA Institute fee was paid by the Library, and the conference was
free to all library employees. Others were charged $35, $25 to TIE/Black
Gold members, plus a $10 late charge.
We had 122 registrants: 84 from academic libraries, 30 from public libraries,
1 school, 6 special, 1 unknown. Cecily Johns, Deputy University Librarian,
gave the welcoming address.
Suggestions from conference participants: have a representative from the
campus (Executive Vice Chancellor, etc.) give welcoming speech; provide a
registrants list.
Conference net income: $1,018.61, was added to the Friends of the Library
funds. Total net income from 1993-1998 conferences is $12,216.15.
The entire committee list and assignments, as well as reports from volunteers
is on l://lauc/conf.doc. The conference web page is at:
http://www.library.ucsb.edu/conference.
To be resolved at a later date:
Historically, Friends of the Library have fronted money needed for LAUC
conferences, and net income from conferences have gone into the Friends
account. When a new University Librarian is hired, we suggest asking that
LAUC-SB be allowed to spend the proceeds for projects agreed upon by the LAUC-SB
membership.
