You & Your Career:
A Series on Mentoring and Professional Development

Developed by the LAUC-SB WOM Committee


Purpose

To provide a series of programs on mentoring and professional development focusing on strategies for both those who mentor and those who might benefit from mentoring; geared to librarians at all levels, but open to all library employees who are interested in pursuing a librarian career.
  • The WOM Committee will be requesting and distributing a list of questions beforehand.
  • Scheduled on Fridays, somewhat monthly, from 10-11:30AM, Mary Cheadle Room.
  • During the following week, a brown bag at lunch will be held for informal discussion of the issues.

4/19/02 Lily Maestas, career advisor, UCSB Counseling & Career Services; lecturer, Education 164; and career columnist for Coastlines, the UCSB Alumni Association magazine: to speak on options and tools for career assessment (author of: Unlimited options: career strategies to last a lifetime)
Mentorship
  • Mentoring issues: Who to work with? How to find someone?
  • Mentoring: How to be a mentor (formally and informally)
  • Building mentoring relationships
  • Role of supervisors in mentoring, and tips & strategies for the managers
Speakers will address developing mentoring skills and using mentors to move forward.
6/7/02 Sarah Pritchard, experienced as a mentee, in formal internship programs at the entry level and as a mid-career manager, and as a mentor and planner of mentoring programs; served on several ALA committees that worked to devise internship and mentoring programs for new librarians; currently a mentor in the ARL Leadership and Career Development Program.

Karin Duran, served on the CLA committee for mentoring new librarians; has been a mentor for Reforma, for UCLA graduate students, and in the formal mentor program at CSUN

8/30/02 Linda Kennedy, Librarian, UC Davis, Vice President/President-Elect of LAUC, 2002/03; served as chair of national professional committees and will speak on developing a leadership role on committees and getting members involved

Gary Colmenar, President of the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) (2002 - 03), will speak on getting involved professionally and what avenues are available in the library, in professional associations, and in local communities.

9/20/02 Sarah Pritchard, author and editor; served on the editorial board of academic journals; editorial advisor for several major reference publications; will provide insights about the whole research, writing, and publishing process.

Art Stickney, editorial director of ABC-CLIO's books division, manages the development and production of their books; extensive experience in reference book publishing; will give insights into the book publishing world, and will talk about what publishers look for from writers and what publishing opportunities there are for librarians.

Eunice Schroeder, "Small Change, Derivatives, or Career Capital?: Reviewing and Editing for Growth and Value"
Eunice has served as book reviews editor for Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association; She holds a Ph.D. in music from Stanford University and has published articles and reviews in several musicology and library journals; she will discuss issues pertaining to book reviewing and related matters.

Mary Larsgaard has worked with two LSTA grants and as an investigator on a National Science Foundation grant, the 1994-1998 Digital Library Initiative, the Alexandria Digital Library. She will talk about lessons learned from these experiences.

Debra Park, Director of Development, UCSB Libraries. Her experience working with grants is from both as a librarian and in her current role as Director of Library Development and Outreach. Debra will speak on relevant grant issues gained from experiences in the field of development.

Nancy Lewis, Office of Research, will provide an overview of the grants submission, review and approval process at UCSB. Her experience working with grants comes from her current position as a Contract and Grant Officer in the Office of Research and as a Paralegal at the Smithsonian Institution.
