Librarians Association of the University of California

LAUC-Santa Barbara Program Meeting
February 18, 1999, 10 a.m.

Ilene Nagel, Executive Vice Chancellor, met with the librarians. We

welcomed her to UCSB, and each librarian explained what their areas of

responsibility were.

	I. Nagel told the group she was very pleased that Sarah Pritchard

accepted the position of University Librarian, and that she looked forward

to working with her. She has appointed Sarah to the Academic Affairs

Advisory Committee; Sarah will also be on the Information Technology

Board.

She also said that she supports the idea of a new library

building, but the final decision also has to take into account

other needs on campus, such as buildings that need seismic retrofitting.

She mentioned that Bruce Tiffney, Chair of the Senate Library Committee,

made an impassioned presentation to the Academic Senate

on behalf of the Library and its need for a new building. She has asked

him to work with her on other campus projects, but he declined because of

his commitment to the Library.

She was very interested in the role of librarians in campus

instruction, and mentioned the possibility of more active librarian

participation in academic classes. We explained the teaching roles that

librarians now have, and told her we would be very interested in having a

more proactive role in campus instructional planning.

The meeting adjourned at 11 a.m.
