Mentoring (WOM) for new members.

5. CPD (N. Llamas)

Expect to receive an email about possible extra travel money that we could

avail ourselves. Advise members to pass information to everyone about

bargain airfares to New Orleans. Most fares have been expensive so far.

G. Colmenar will create a link from the LAUC-SB homepage to S. Lewis'

helpful website for new people to Santa Barbara.

7. Campus Committee Reports

a. Academic Senate Affirmative Action Committee (S. Weimer)

S. Weimer gave a progress report on the activities of the committee on the

following item agendas.

A survey by committee chair Sharon Farmer on the

attainment of affirmative action goals and programs through recruitment,

retention, and cultural diversity programs.

The committee will review the services to faculty and academic appointees

with disabilities. To determine their needs, existing and/or lack of

services, especially as these issues affect library services. One complaint

that concerns the library is the inability of patrons on wheelchair to reach

books on the higher shelves.

To participate in early outreach programs to K-12 partnerships supported by

UCOP initiatives. To provide educational opportunities to students coming

from low-income families and to increase the academic enrichment of UCSB

students by engendering a diverse campus community are the goals of the

program. Sarah Fenstermaker is the chair of this program.

The committee will meet with E. Zimmerman, Provost of the College of Letters

and Science, on May 19 to develop plans on how to broaden the search pools

in recruitment and to enhance minority selection and retention. It is also

crucial that department chairs know about these goals as they have

Chancellor Yang's full support.

Action: The Library and Instruction and Services Committee (LISC) will

work on revising the guide, "Services to Persons with Disabilities,"

to ensure that it meets users' needs.

b. Faculty Legislature (S. Weimer)

Chancellor Yang raised the issue of the enrollment process on campus.

He would like to see more diversity in the student population and would

like faculty and staff rise to the challenge. A discussion ensued about

the need for more LAUC representation in other campus committees. The

Academic Senate has included librarians as non-voting member on five of the

Senate Committees.

Committee on Academic Freedom, S. Weimer

Committee on Affirmative Action, Wei-ling Dai

Senate Library Committee, Wei-ling Dai

Committee on Effective Teaching

and Instructional Support, S. Curtis

Committee on Computing Information Technology

and Telecommunications Policy, S. DeDecker

In addition, we have seven non-voting members in the LAUC in the Faculty

Legislature Committee. They are Gary Colmenar, Sylvia Curtis, Patrick

Dawson, Sandy Lewis, Nerea Llamas, Janet Martorana, and Sally Weimer.

The legislature also brought up the problem of lack of parking on campus.

c. Committee on Effective Teaching and Instructional Support (S. Curtis)

The awards sub-committee is now waiting for the formal announcement from

Chancellor Yang for this year's winners of the Distinguished Teaching Awards.

S. Curtis mentioned that the recommendation letters about the winners were

excellent. She was also impressed at the broad range of teaching styles

that many of our faculty and lecturers employ.

New Business:

LAUC-SB would like to show our appreciation to B. Tiffney who has been one

of the strongest advocates of the library. A book donation to the library

in his honor or a plaque were some of the suggestions.

The meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m.
