Minutes of the LAUC-SB Executive Committee Meeting June 5, 1998

The Committee met with EVC Donald Crawford and Dr. Ronald Tobin to address

questions regarding the status of the search for a new Library Director

and interim responsibilities. Dr. Boisse's disability status began on

June 1st; an announcement is forthcoming.

University Librarian recruitment: The Committee on Committees has

nominated faculty to serve on the Search Committee. A professor of

history will chair the committee; Bruce Tiffney will also serve; Ronald

Tobin will serve as consultant. Two LAUC members/representatives will be

appointed. EVC Crawford will soon draft the advertisement. LAUC-SB informed Dr. Crawford

of the upcoming annual ALA Annual Meeting as an

opportunity for distributing information. The Committee should

begin reviewing materials in September. In the interim, Ronald Tobin will

continue to serve as liaison to the office of the EVC and will have

final authority on any initiatives and significant issues beyond the

daily operations of the Library. LEC will continue to manage the

day-to-day affairs of the Library.

Responsibility for reviews: The Academic Personnel office has final

authority for reviews of library academic personnel.

Recruitments for EVC and Provost: Finalists for the EVC position are

currently visiting campus; a decision should be imminent. The search for

Provost will be re-activated following appointment of the EVC.

New building: Three working committees have been formed. The Library

Committee will be chaired by John Vasi. The Committee on Classrooms will

be chaired by Leal Mertes, Geography. The Committee on Research, chair

still to be appointed, will focus on learning through technology. The

overall focus of considerations at this time is the justification for

needed space. Planning for the building would be the next step. EVC

Crawford said he believed LAUC would be represented on committees.
