Librarians Association of the University of California at Santa Barbara
LAUC-SB Executive Board
Meeting Friday, December 19, with Executive Vice-Chancellor Crawford
Carol Gibbens and Sherry DeDecker met with Donald Crawford to
discuss librarian concerns regarding library organization, the Library
budget, and implementation of recommendations from the Library Review.
We shared with him the projects librarians are involved with -
implementation of DRA, work on the long-range plan, recommendations from
the external review, and participation in projects for the CDL. In light
of these time-sensitive activities, the need for strong and clear
leadership is crucial.
Crawford gave us the following information:
1. Joe Boisse is on a regular sick leave, from which he can return at
any time upon his doctor's advice. His accumulated sick leave benefits
extend several months.
2. If Boisse is not able to return, a nationwide search for a new
Librarian will begin immediately.
3. A decision has not been made regarding an Interim Librarian.
4. Crawford gave us the list of responsibilities for each of the three
remaining AULs - Cecily Johns, John Vasi, and Detrice Bankhead. He will
ask Johns to share this information with the Library.
5. We asked who is ultimately in charge of the Library. Crawford will
ask Johns/Vasi/Bankhead to clarify the decision making processes and
lines of authority as they currently exist in light of Boisse's absence.
6. We expressed the librarians' wish to be informed of these
clarifications and mentioned our concern that sources on and off campus
outside the Library often have information on Library management that we
have not received.
7. Crawford is acting as the Library's advocate in conveying our
budgetary needs to the Chancellor.
8. Crawford does not know when we can expect to hear of the outcome of
the Library budget requests.
9. We informed him that LAUC committees are working on recommendations
for implementing the recommendations for the Library Review, and that CAP
(Committee on Advancement and Promotion) is looking into issues raised in
the Review regarding merit and promotion practices for librarians.
10. We asked about the search for a Development Officer - Crawford will
look into this and let us know.
11. We mentioned the need for filling Librarian positions, and LAUC's
role in advising the Librarian on the need for specific positions. Again,
this process will depend upon who is in charge of the Library.
The Library Executive Board will meet again with Crawford in January.
