LAUC Santa Barbara
Executive Board Meeting, Transition meeting
August 20, 1997
Present: Rosemary Meszaros (chair), Patrick Dawson, Sherry DeDecker, Andrea
Duda, Carol Gibbens, Lynne Hayman, Chuck Huber, Janet Martorana, Catherine
Nelson, Beverly Ryan
Rosemary reported on the statewide LAUC transition meeting held August 14.
1. The Fall Assembly will be Nov. 21 at Davis. A panel is planned to discuss
patterns of scholarly publishing.
2. A California Millennium conference is being planned for 1999. This
conference would involve librarians from all types of libraries in
California. Lucia Snowhill has been attending the meetings for this group
and will report soon on LAUC's participation.
3. A statewide LAUC webpage is being discussed. Miki reported that she
will talk with Gary Lawrence about it. She has received several names
from LAUC divisions of individuals who have volunteered to assist with the
design of the webpage.
4. Myron Okada and Peter Chester discussed several matters with
the LAUC Executive Board:
a. Stipends - This proposal is in final review. Okada stated that
stipends parallels the greater flexibility of block grants being given to
each campus, i.e., the chancellors on each campus would develop local
guidelines for the administration of the stipends. The state is no longer
mandating guidelines; flexibility is being given to the campuses.
b. Adding steps to librarian series - Okada reported that there was no
consensus across the system. He mentioned that the ULs were supportive of
the addition.
c. Salary survey - Okada reported that the older survey (1995?) was not
being supplemented. No salary surveys are underway. (Miki Goral stated
that she had still not sent the letter to President Atkinson on the subject
of salaries written by Gary Peete approximately a year ago. She did not
indicate future action on this matter.)
1996-97 LAUC-SB reports will appear on the LAUC-SB web pages as soon as
they are received.
LAUC-SB vice chair and chair of the program committee, Sherry Dedecker,
announced that Xavier Lopez will be here to discuss organizational design
issues and digital libraries in September. It was suggested that a
committee be formed to work with the vice chair on the LAUC-SB conference.
In coming chair Patrick Dawson will be the LAUC representative to HOPS.
The 1997-98 LAUC-SB Executive Board will assume office September 1:
Patrick Dawson, Chair
Sherry DeDecker, Vice Chair and Chair of Program Committee
Lynne Hayman, Secretary
Carol Gibbens, Chair of CAP
Janet Martorana, Chair of CAAR
Jim Markham, Chair of CPD*
Nerea LLamas, Vice Chair, Chair-Elect of CPD
*Note: To coincide with the academic year, the transition for CPD is
effective July 1.
