Minutes of the LAUC-SB Meeting March 5, 1998

Bruce Tiffney met with the LAUC-SB membership at this meeting to discuss

the status of the building proposal and several other matters related to

work of the Senate Library Committee. He reported the following:

--As most staff are aware, Ron Tobin, in addition to his role as Associate

Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs, has been appointed by the campus

administration to the library in a role as a fact finder.

--A letter has been written to the campus administration expressing

support for allocating funds to preclude the necessity of another serials

cancellation next year. Sixty to seventy letters have been received from

faculty, several drafted by departments. Faculty are aware of our concern

about the insufficient level of support for the library and share that

concern.

--John Vasi has been working hard to secure support for additional

physical facilities for the library. The most promising avenue of

potential future growth is in a facility that would support teaching in a

virtual environment. Retrofitting of the present building would need to

be included as an adjunct. The recently distributed proposal is in the

nature of a vision statement, a concept presently open for discussion.

Quality space is much less than at other UC campuses. The major players

are conceived to be the UCSB Library, Instructional Development, the

Department of Geography, the Department of Geography, the Department of

Psychology and the California Digital Library. The goal is to construct a

building worthy of UCSBs reputation. The concept entails the integration

of the library with instructional and research functions. EVC Crawford

has appointed a Steering Committee. John Vasi serves on the Committee,

whose first charge is to consider and comment on the concept, then to

decide who should be involved in developing it further.
