Comments on "Draft Vision and Goals for UCSB Library", LAUC-SB Task Force on Library

Long Range Plan, 2/18/98.

 General Comments

*Should each Vision statement be a single statement?

*Each vision statement needs a key concept label.

*Each statement should be approximately the same length.

*Eliminate the word "vision" for each statement; statements compose a single vision.

*There is no statement related to planning; there should be.

Vision 1

*Lumps several concepts together in one statement; reduce this to a single concept.

*Add the word research, as in "knowledge exchange, research and creativity".

*Change "rewards" to "fairly rewards".

*Add to the end of the last sentence "within the University of California".

*Remove the phrase "It is committed to excellence in user-centered services;"

move this concept to Vision 6.

*Hone this vision more specifically.

*Add a goal related to adequate staffing.

Vision 2

*Emphasize technology focus.

*Change term "technologies" to "resources".

*Change "its use and itegration" to "its use and critical integration."

*Drop sentence 2 and make this the first goal related to Vision 1; drop goal 2.

*Drop goal 4; it is redundant.

Vision 3

*Is this vision statement meant to encompass collection management,

cataloging, acquisitions and facilities?

*Goal 1: "To build a collection that integrates information in all formats."

*Add the concept of barrier free access.

Vision 4

*This statement needs to be better conceptualized and focused; there are

"a bunch of things going on here."

*Some discussion as to whether "market" is an appropriate term.

*Change "aggressively market" to "aggressively market and promote."

*Add the concept of the library as a commons.

Vision 5

*Goal 1: Employ a term stronger than "ensure."

*Goal 2: Change "integration of new technology" to "integration

of new technology and traditional resources."

*Remove the phrase "develop a new paradigm;" add another goal related to developing a new model.

Vision 6

*Lose the term "delight" in Goal 3 (and Vision 1); change it to "satisfy" or "excite".

*Keep the term "delight."

Vision 7

*Add a goal related to adaptive technologies.

*Goal related to campus outreach programs.

*Goal 2: eliminate "more".

Vision 8

*Goal 1: Add "and national research institutions.

*Goal 2: Change "information delivery" to "information access and delivery."
