LAUC-SB Business Meeting
Friday, December 10, 1999  10:00 a.m.

Agenda

1.  LAUC Fall Assembly report
2.  LAUC-SB Committee reports

3. Other committee reports (LAUC systemwide, campus committees)

1. LAUC Fall Assembly report

The University Librarian for the UC-Merced campus will be one of the first three administrative positions hired. Janet Martorana distributed a University of California Merced Fact Sheet.

Sarah Pritchard distributed the "Proposed Transition Plan for New Librarian Salary Scale" and the "Proposed Restructure of the Librarian Salary Scale".

Note from Janet regarding the transition plan: a lot of effort and thought went into a plan that would contain no current or future salary losses, and those who have passed the hurdle step(s) will not have to undergo an extensive career review again for the same rank. It has not yet gone to collective bargaining, but hopefully it will soon, as this proposal does not yet address those represented by the unit.

The next step for the proposed restructure plan is approval by the AFT. Several members of LAUC noted that they prefer the plan not to be presented as part of a bundle of proposals, but because of the plan's importance, it should stand alone.

Sarah stated that the University Librarians fully support the proposed structure.

Janet distributed copies of the LAUC Position Paper No. 1 (Criteria for Appointment or Promotion to the Ranks of Associate Librarian and Librarian and Advancement to Librarian Step V) and statistics of the UC librarian distribution. The position paper may be up for review. Janet asked us to look at the criteria and statistics involved in this issue. Are our expectations reasonable? What does it take to get to Step 5? The case histories for advancement are not known to everyone. Sylvia Curtis suggested a program meeting to discuss this issue.

Cathy Chiu announced that LAUC's Governance Committee is going to look at each campus's criteria for review.

Lucia Snowhill proposed a program for the discussion of the review process since we have so many new librarians. A tentative meeting date was set for the week before classes begin in January.
