LAUC Santa Barbara
General Meeting
December 10, 1996
Meeting was called to discuss the Report from the Ad Hoc Committee to
Review the Many Voices Report with Regards to Sexual Orientation
Issues. The Many Voices of Diversity Report is available here.
The Committee requested that each campus meet and send comments to the
committee's chair, Locke Morrisey, before the end of the first week of
January. Nerea will be taking our responses to the next
meeting of the LAUC Cultural Diversity Committee, January 31, 1997.
Rosemary opened the meeting by summarizing discussions of the report that
took place at the LAUC Fall Assembly. At the Assembly concerns were voiced
about: changing the name of the LAUC Cultural Diversity Committee, diluting
the effectiveness of the original Many Voices of Diversity Report, and
including items in the report that did not come within LAUC's purview,
among other things.
Incorporating both reports into one was mentioned. This was discussed
and rejected at the Assembly.
Recommendations:
1. A name change must go through the process detailed in the bylaws and
will take 2 years, although the committee can continue operating during
that time. LAUC-SB agrees with the proposal to change the name to LAUC
Committee on Diversity, but doesn't feel its worth "going to the mat" over.
2. A Principles of Community statement was approved at the LAUC Assembly.
3. LAUC-SB agrees.
4. Not supported as this is not in LAUC's purview. Has been discussed in
contract negotiations and rejected by UCOP.
5. LAUC-SB agrees, but suggests that #5 and #6 be made consistent in the
use of the words cultural and social.
6-14. LAUC-SB agrees
15. Not a LAUC activity. Suggest rewriting to parallel #13 in the Many
Voices report.
16-20. LAUC-SB agrees
21. Not supported. Concerns were voiced about the purpose of the survey
and about confidentiality. A personnel issue, not LAUC business.
22. LAUC-SB agrees
23-24. Suggest incorporating into #5
Additional LAUC-SB recommendations:
- Information in the conclusion needs to be in the introductory section.
- An umbrella document addressing the broader issue of diversity, under
which these 2 reports would fall.
