Bruce Tiffney, Chair of the Senate Library Committee, met with LAUC-SB to
discuss the Library review.
Tiffney emphasized the need to go forward with recommendations
from the Review while
attention from campus is still focused on the
Library. He stated the need to have a long-range
plan in place, and plans
to meet with LEC to discuss this.
Tiffney summarized the
recommendations into four areas:
1.Integration The library needs representation on
more committees on campus.
Janet Martorana stated that librarians are already on five
Academic
Senate committees, although we would like representation on some
more.
ACTION: Martorana will
send Tiffney a list of librarians who are
presently on Academic Senate committees.
She will also send a list of
those committees on which librarians would like representation.
2. Physical plant A new Library is not on the campus plan. Argument needs to be put forth to add planning for a new Library, as well as renovations for the present structure. Tiffney suggested we sell the plan by advancing the Library as an electronic teaching facility.
3. Resources One consideration is the change in the UC budget process from a line in the budget for the Library. The Office of the President now gives the chancellors budgetary discretion, so the Library is now competing with other campus departments for the same funds.
Plans to hire a development officer to be shared with the College of Creative Studies are already in place. Personnel issues regarding librarians which were raised in the Review are being addressed by CAP (Committee on Advancement and Promotion). Tiffney suggested the need for multi-year appointments of the Senate Library Committee, to ensure continuity. John King of UCI is the new UCAL (University of California Academic Library Committee) Chair. He was Interim Librarian at UCI for two years, so has an understanding of the needs of campus libraries. Tiffney also said that among improvements that UC libraries need are improved interlibrary loan through unified borrowing privileges and standardization among campuses. Issues brought up by LAUC members:
1. What can we do to help facilitate implementation of recommendations in the Library review? LAUC can ask what is happening with recommendations from the review, as far as personnel must take action to improve library resources. The Academic Senate must take action to push for a new building. The Council on Academic Planning is the administrative committee to make building/renovation decisions; it needs pressure from the individual unit. LAUC could work with Library administration to apply this pressure. LAUC can also provide input for the long-range plan for the Library.
ACTION: LAUC-SB Executive Board will contact Cecily Johns to arrange a meeting to discuss the long-range plan. Librarians should speak with their department chairs to ensure they are aware of Library needs. LAUC should have a representative on UCAL. Tiffney will ask about this. A request was made by music faculty that a faculty member be allowed to be part of the search committee for the Music Librarian.
ACTION: LAUC-SB Executive Board will meet to discuss this.
