1. Announcements:

LAUC statewide spring assembly is at UCSB, June 1, 2000.

E-mail memo from Sarah regarding the meeting discussion of the UC/LAUC salary proposal by the Council of Vice Chancellors (COVC) looks positive.

Look at the orientation checklist created by the Welcoming, Orientation and Mentoring Committee (W.O.M.). If you are a new librarian, check the list to see if everything has been covered. Other librarians can also look at this checklist to see if they are up to date. The file is located on the L drive in the "Welcome" folder.

For information regarding the recently passed California Senate Bill 645 (union dues); see the October 13, 1999 article in the Los Angeles Times.

2. LAUC-SB Committee Reports

CAP (Cathy Chiu) The committee is currently working on clarifying local procedures such as "Who is a secondary reviewer" and "Which letters are confidential." A meeting with Detrice is scheduled for next week.

CAAR (Nerea LLamas) The committee is working on a draft of the job statement for the Near East position.

CPD (Lorna Lueck) Three research proposals have been submitted. CPD will review the proposals and Patrick will submit comments to the LAUC Research and Professional Development Committee.

Program Committee (Sylvia Curtis) Committee is focusing on three areas for program ideas: Campus initiatives and activities, i.e., campus computing facilities, herbarium library Santa Barbara, i.e., impact of Brooks, SBCC, Fielding, Natural History Museum, etc. UC and extramural, i.e., CDL Next program is PIR update, December 9, 1999.

LAUC Systemwide committee reports

Committee on committees (Yolanda Blue) Yolanda discussed the charge to the committee from LAUC president Patricia Inouye to examine the committee structure and possible reorganization including more project based groups, rather than standing committees, with the President soliciting, charging and constituting groups with specific projects in mind. The consensus of LAUC-SB is to keep the standing committees but they can have project-driven charges.

UCSB Campus committees

Academic Senate Library committee (Janet Martorana) Minutes of 10-08-99 meeting distributed to LAUC-SB in e-mail message dated 10-29-99. We need to increase our activity in getting their support for our new building.

Academic Senate Faculty Legislature (Janet) Davidson Library has 7 non-voting members: Sally Weimer, Sandy Lewis, Patrick Dawson, Sylvia Curtis, Nerea Llamas, Gary Colmenar and Janet Martorana.

Chancellor Yang gave a "state of the campus" address. There is now an Academic Planning Committee with eight subcommittees. UCSB has dropped off the party school list.

The quality of admissions is increasing. A task force to revise the general education requirements has been created. Muriel Zimmerman is the chair.

Open enrollment for benefits ends November 22 at midnight. You may also enroll in the legal plan at this time. There will be a possible option in the medical plans allowing us to seek second opinions at the UCLA medical center. The fee remission for dependents of UC employees has been approved in principle. It will be submitted to UCOP.

Computing, Information Technology & Telecommunications Policy committee (Sherry DeDecker) A draft of the University of California Electronic Communications Policy was sent to LAUC-SB in an e-mail message on October 13, 1999. Sherry passed out a copy of Section III, Allowable Use. She asked us to pay special attention to:

CETIS (Sylvia Curtis) Committee has finished drafts of awards for teaching and instructional development. Call for nominees to go out soon.

UC committees

CDL RFP Steering Committee (Catherine Nelson) Send comments regarding functionality concerns and priorities for the new Melvyl 2 OPAC to Catherine, the UCSB representative to the steering committee.
