LAUC Santa Barbara
Executive Board Meeting
January 28, 1997

Present: Rosemary Meszaros (chair), Patrick Dawson, Andrea Duda, Chuck Huber,
Catherine Nelson, Beverly Ryan, Joe Boisse Three items were on the agenda for discussion with the University Librarian: Library Programmatic Review The status of the review is that the external committee that was here
January 16-17 is to write a report to the campus review committee. The
campus review committee will then write a report for the vice-
chancellor. Dates or deadlines are unkn own at this time. The University
Librarian said that he would keep LAUC informed as
information becomes available. Fundraising/Development Activities Most efforts are organized around the Friends of the Library where
the focus is on collections and donors. This year documents and
information are being prepared to raise money for the purchase of a
large record collection. (The owners of the collection are looking for
donors to purchase the collection for UCSB.) No capital campaign is in place. Major gifts and donations are
obtained through quiet cultivation which can take years. Efforts are
focused on Special Collections, which receives almost no state funding. The Foundation Board is participating in a feasibility study for a
campus capital campaign. Davidson Library endowments have a market value of about $2,000,000
(value of principal): Skofield $600,000 Printers collection Wyles $300,000 Lincoln and the Civil War era Monaghan $200,000 supplement for Wyles Collection Eugene & Suzette Davidson $150,000 Nazi era Germany (will eventually include his personal collection) Bernath $160,000 American diplomatic history Pearl Chase $20,000 Santa Barbara area environmental issues and history Corle $80,000 Corle lecture Donald Davidson $36,000 Levy $13,000 general Lotte Lehmann $10,000 being set up now Shiers $80,000 History of technology, trade catalog, book restoration for Special Collections Library memorial Endowment $13,000 other memorial donations Library Special Endowment $36,000 other miscellaneous gifts There is no long term strategy. The lack of professional schools makes
fundraising more difficult. Personnel The Archivist for the Performing Arts position has closed. Interviews
will probably begin in February. Ads have gone out for the permanent reference position. This will be
a regional, rather than a national, search. Additional positions will not be planned until after the review
report is received. Systemwide news Joanne Euster will be retiring from Irvine in a few months. UC and CSU are discussing loading CSU data on Melvyl. They are also
discussing a joint Tricor contract. (Tricor is the commercial courier
service for ILL) CSU will soon be accepting bids or proposals for some kind of systemwide
union catalog.
