Comment on proposed changes to Position Paper #1

The following three points came out of UCSB's discussion of the proposed changes to Position Paper #1:

1) In the note section, (page 2), "Memorandum of Understanding" should be retained and "other legal documents" deleted since the latter phrase is too vague. The MOU applies to all librarians who are represented by the AFT, and this is the majority. The section numbers in the APM are not the same as the section numbers in the MOU, and therefore having just the APM section numbers in this paper is of little assistance to a library who is represented by the AFT and who therefore must go to the MOU for this information.

2) On item #6 the changes under consideration column is blank. If the blank in the proposed column means this section is being eliminated, we strongly feel that it should be retained, since it covers concepts basic to the postion paper. Also, on line 2 we strongly recommend that “appointee” be changed to “librarian”.

3) On item 4, we recommend deleting the bracketed last line reading "as described in Position Paper No. 6". Position Paper #6 doesn’t exist yet and will take a considerable amount of time to compose and have approved, thus shouldn’t be referred to yet.
