Current
Cataloging Shelves Cleared

Copy Cataloging Unit Head, Anna DeVore, sent
this photo and the following report to the Library Waves
on Wednesday, October 13th:
This morning our current cataloging
shelves
were emptied. This event last occurred in the Fall of 2001, when NOTIS
shut down and
receiving temporarily ceased. The happy crew are (left to right):
Su-ching Lin,
Jody Horton, Louisa Espinoza, Anna DeVore, Kao Yang, Eleanor Gonzales,
Steve Johnson, and Barbara Wright (owner of the cell phone used to
capture
the celebratory moment). Now we move on to the gifts backlog . .

Friends' Book Sales Move To New Location
With the relocation of the
Reserve Book Service to the Circulation Desk, the Friends of the UCSB
Libraries were presented with an opportunity to move their periodic
book sales to a more convenient and visible venue.
Library book sale regulars were
pleasantly surprised to find better book browsing space when they came
to the November book sale. The vacated space will be converted to
additional study rooms with the spectacular views that the 8th
Floor is known for.

CLA
Meets In San Jose
Renata Hundley
traveled to the Silicon Valley in order to attend the California
Library Association's 106th Annual Conference. In addition to
organizing and presenting her first conference workshop, Renata was
able to tour the new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and attend
some special events. Shown here is a
picture of State Librarian and recent CLA President, Susan Hildreth,
with a mascot promoting the California State Library's Rural Initiative
(an LSTA funded project
that directs additional resources to the state's geographically
isolated public libraries). The cow made a "guest appearance" at the
State Librarian's breakfast. Click

Lotusland
with LAUC-SB's WOM
Visualize
lotus blossoms, think Wwwwommmmm;
ready
for a
field trip? With these words, the Librarians Association of the
University of California, Santa Barbara
Division's Welcoming, Orientation and Mentoring (LAUC-SB's WOM )
committee invited the library mailing list to a
get-to-know-Santa Barbara area
excursion. Participants enjoyed a docent-led two-hour
walking tour of "the spectacular, botanical wonderland, the
37-acre
Montecito estate called Lotusland".
The property was owned and created by Polish opera singer
Ganna Walska, and now the non-profit Ganna Walska
Lotusland Foundation maintians it. They open the gardens to the
public by reservation only,
mid-February
to mid-November. There are several different gardens and collections at
Lotusland: a Japanese garden, lotus pond, cactus
garden of about 300 species, a
topiary garden, a huge collection of rare
cycads, and more.
For more information on Lotusland visit their website: http://www.lotusland.org/welcome.html.
For photos of the plants and
gardens seen by the group, click on the picture of the lotus pods
pictured above.
