blue bullet Librarians Travel to Orlando for ALA Annual Meeting
Several UCSB librarians attended the American Library Association Annual Meeting in Orlando, attending meetings, listening to speakers, and networking with colleagues.  When the ALA Library Instruction Round Table announced its LIRT's Top Twenty library instruction articles of 2003, they selected issue no.37 (Spring 2003) of  Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship (http://www.istl.org/03-spring/), a journal edited by our own Andrea Duda.  The theme of the issue was "Information Literacy for Science & Technology."  (See pages 7-9 at  (http://www3.baylor.edu/LIRT/lirtnews/2004/jun04.pdf) for the complete Top Twenty list.

A number of  receptions, fundraisers and vendor-sponsored activities were also available at ALA, and a few UCSB people attended the Ex Libris function at Sea World.

blue bullet Harbor Seals Watched and Watched Over By Librarians
Carpinteria harbor seals When visitors to the Carpinteria Bluffs earlier this year asked the docent about the harbor seal  rookery below, there was a good chance that they might have been talking to a librarian from the Davidson Library.   Anne  Barnhart, Lucia Snowhill, and retired librarian, Carol Gibbens, volunteered to work weekly shifts from mid-January through the end of May.  The beach is legally closed from Dec. 1 to May 31 in order to give the harbor seal mothers safe places to give birth, nurse their young and wean their pups.  These three braved winter weather as well as hot spring days to help make this possible.  More photos.

greenBits & Pieces

Night Supervisor, Ben Baird got creative and wrote this song late one July night.  (Hum the Rolling Stone's You Can't Always Get What You Want as you read about our Reserve Book Service.)

Get What You Need
written by Ben Baird
with assistance by the Tuesday night shift

I went down to the Reserve Book Room
To get my Chem 109 test.
I was standing in line with Mr. Gloom,
And boy, did he look pretty vexed.

He said I really need to check this book out,
I have a paper due at 8 am.
And even though he got really angry,
The student behind the counter just shook his head,
He said to him -

You can't always get the book you want,
You can't always get the book you want.
But place a hold time,
And you just might find,
You get what you need!
