green bullet 2004 Library Picnic Moves to the Beach

The Annual Library Picnic, a time to relax and enjoy the company of our co-workers in a setting away from
the regular surroundings, took place at Goleta Beach Park this year.  The weather couldn't have been more
perfect as all who attended enjoyed the views, the mild sun and great food.  Besides raffled prizes and the
presentation of Staff Service Awards, the group was treated to sounds of Appalachian folksongs and
fiddletunes,
hillbilly music, sea chanties, and country music from the 1920s and 1930s.
    The music was
provided by Temmo Korisheli and the band, the Lemon Pickers.

blue bullet Library Supports and Boosts Annual Backpack Drive
some of the library's contributorsSponsored by the Professional Women's Association and the Associated Students Community Affairs Board as an effort to help reach out to the kids of our local community, the Annual Backpack Drive was once again supported by employees of  the libraries.  The Information Services office served as a campus donation collection site.  The staff from the Arts Library put their creative skills together and filled three age-specific, color-coordinated backpacks, while other donors contributed backpacks and school supplies which were used to fill the backpacks.   More photos
blue bullet David Gartrell Attends International Congress on Archives
Vienna

In late August, David Gartrell traveled to Vienna, where he gave a presentation on collection development and access issues of our American Religions Collection.  He made his presentation while attending the 15th International Congress on Archives which, like the Olympics, only takes place every four years.  David reports that the ICA was extremely educational and inspiring (not to mention an enjoyable opportunity for eating a lot of Sachertorte!)  More photos

blue bullet SBCC Professor Lectures on Critical Thinking
Joe WhiteWhat does it mean to be a critical thinker?  How do you teach your students the concept of critical thinking and the skills to put it to work?  Joe White, Chair of the Philosophy Department at Santa Barbara City College, addressed this topic at a forum in the Mary Cheadle Room just before the beginning of the new academic year.  The lecture was well-attended by library instructors and staff as well as Writing Program instructors, and Professor White's enthusiastic presentation generated much discussion and thought.

Marcel Brannemann and Anne BarnhartGerman, EEMB (Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology), and MCDB (Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology) librarian, Jim Markham and his wife, Ella, hosted a small gathering in their home in order for UCSB folks to meet a visiting German librarian.  Their visiting friend was Marcel Brannemann, director of the library of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Germany, which is now the parent institution of the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland.  Jim worked on seaweeds for years - in his pre-librarian days when he was a marine botanist at Biologische Anstalt Helgoland.  Marcel Brannemann is the President-Elect of IAMSLIC, the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers, and was on his way around the world to the 30th Annual Conference of IAMSLIC in Hobart, Tasmania.                                                                     More photos.
