PURPOSE and INTENDED OUTCOMES
The purpose of this project is to examine the concepts and issues of information
literacy, and to learn new methods and tools for its instruction. The objective
is to incorporate these methods into the high school curriculum through lesson
plan development and access to electronic databases, and to assess and evaluate
the effects of this instruction on student performance. The long-range goal is
to enhance the research skills of high-risk students to prepare them for a
successful transition to college. The project supports the University of
California's goal of increasing eligibility and enrollment rates of
educationally disadvantaged students, and improving these students' ability
to compete in the University's selective admissions environment.
Intended outcomes of the workshop are to:
-
Explore information literacy concepts designed to improve learning outcomes
for students.
-
Introduce resources relevant to your research needs and those of your students.
-
Develop strategies, skills, and activities for teaching information literacy,
including creating lesson plans and assignments that support the academic
content standards adopted by the California State Board of Education.
-
Incorporate technology into research and information literacy instruction,
including database and internet searching and evaluation of resources.
-
Develop assessment tools for use with your students.
ABOUT the PROJECT
Support for this project is provided through a Faculty Outreach Grant from
the Chancellor's Outreach Advisory Board and from the UCSB Davidson Library.
