When Do I Need to Use the VPN?
You need the VPN ...
- if you want to access research databases or e-journals and you are not connected to the campus network
- Hint: If the resource you want to use is listed on the UCSB Library's Web site as "UCSB only", then you will
need the VPN to access it from off campus.
You do not need the VPN ...
- if you only want to use Pegasus or Melvyl
- if you are using a computer connected to the campus network
- in the library
- in an office or lab on campus
- connected to the Internet via an on-campus wireless network
- connected to ResNet in on-campus housing
Why Do I Need to Use the VPN?
You need the VPN ...
- because the resources available through are library subscriptions are superior to anything you can get free on the Internet
- because access to our online subscriptions are validated by the IP address of your computer
- because the VPN gives you an on-campus IP address while you are connected
VPN use is available only to UCSB faculty, staff, and current students.
