UCSB Library Proxy Server Transition

We have a new proxy server. The old service has been retired and is no longer available.

Why Did We Change Proxy Servers?

The new proxy server offers great advantages over the old one.
  • It requires no set up on the part of the user. You can freely change browsers and computers without losing access to the proxy server. There will also be fewer frustrations with pop-up blockers, etc.

  • This proxy server adds greater security for your ID and password information that was not possible with the old server.

What do I Have to Do to Use the Proxy Server?

How does the New Proxy Server Work?

There are two ways to use the new proxy server:
  1. The "click-through" method: Click on the "Off-Campus Log-In" link on the library home page and log in using your UCSBnetID and password. If you go through the "success" page and click on one of the links at left on that page, the proxy authentication will follow you. It breaks when you either use an unproxied bookmark or type in a URL. You will be able to tell that the proxy is still active if you see the string "proxy.library.ucsb.edu" in the address when you are viewing a site.

  2. Starting somewhere other then the Library Home Page: Some people like to use bookmarks or start their research at a point other than the library home page. For people who want to use like that, we recommend the Off-Campus bookmark tool. Basically, when you get to someplace where you need the proxy server, you will use the bookmark tool. It will route you through the proxy server (and have you log on if you haven't during that browser session) and then take you back where you were. This will also reestablish the proxy connection if you have broken it by using a bookmark or by typing in a URL.

You might want to read our help pages to understand how the new server works. There are some great features that you might find useful.
