UCSB Library Proxy Server Basics

How it Works

There are two ways to use the new proxy server:
  1. The "click-through" method: Click on the "Off-Campus Log-In" link on the library home page and log in using your UCSBnetID and password. If you go through the "success" page and click on one of the links at left on that page, the proxy authentication will follow you. It breaks when you either use an unproxied bookmark or type in a URL. You will be able to tell that the proxy is still active if you see the string "proxy.library.ucsb.edu" in the address when you are viewing a site.

  2. Starting somewhere other then the Library Home Page: Some people like to use bookmarks or start their research at a point other than the library home page. For people who want to use like that, we recommend the Off-Campus bookmark tool. Basically, when you get to someplace where you need the proxy server, you will use the bookmark tool. It will route you through the proxy server (and have you log on if you haven't during that browser session) and then take you back where you were. This will also reestablish the proxy connection if you have broken it by using a bookmark or by typing in a URL.

Which Browsers are Supported?

The proxy server is browser-independent, i.e., any browser should work with the service. A current browser should be more reliable.

What do I Have to do to Use the Proxy Server?

The proxy server requires no set-up on the part of the user. You only need a UCSBnetID and password.

Note: anyone who used the old proxy server ** must ** undo the set-up for your browser before using the new one. See the instructions for your browser

Keeping the Proxy Session Active

  • The best way to start your research session is to either click on the "Off Campus" link from the library home page, or simply bookmark the proxy server log-in page.
  • The proxy server is working if you see "proxy.library.ucsb.edu:2048" included in the site URL.
  • As long as you navigate through links on the library pages, and by using your back button, the proxy session will remain active.
  • If you navigate away from the session (by using a non-proxied bookmark or by typing a URL in the address box), the proxy session will break.
  • See the Proxy Server Tools page for more information on using bookmarks and the "Off-Campus Access" bookmark tool.

Bookmarking and the "Off-Campus Access" bookmark tool

  • You can bookmark specific databases or e-journals once you have gone through the proxy server log-in page.
  • You can also use unproxied bookmarks in conjunction with the "Off-Campus Access" bookmark tool.
  • See the Proxy Server Tools page for more information.

Who Can Use the Proxy Server?

Proxy server use is available only to UCSB faculty, staff, and current students.

If you are not eligible for proxy use, you will need to use one of the public computers in the library to access our subscriptions. Our license agreements require us to limit off-campus access to UCSB-affiliated users (students, faculty, staff, etc.).
