Off-Campus Access to Research Databases

You do not need to do anything special to use the Pegasus or Melvyl catalogs from off-campus. To access our other research databases you will need to use either the Proxy Server or the VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Proxy Server and VPN use are available only to UCSB faculty, staff, and current students.

Why Use the Proxy Server or the VPN?

  • because the Proxy Server and the VPN give you an on-campus IP address while you are connected
  • because access to our online subscriptions are validated by the IP address of your computer
  • because the resources available through our library subscriptions are superior to anything you can get free on the Internet

Which should I use?

It is really a matter of choice. If one method doesn't work for you, try the other.

Below is a comparison of the two methods:

  • Proxy Server

    • Requires only a web browser and UCSBnetID/password.
    • Ideal for situations when you cannot download software.
    • Will not work with proprietary search software such as SciFinder Scholar, the Insight client, or EndNote connection files.
    • Information about transition to new proxy server

  • VPN (Virtual Private Network)

    • Requires you to download and run the VPN client software, and to have a UCSBnetID/password.
    • Has been found to work in some instances where the proxy will not work.
    • Only method that can be used with proprietary search software such as SciFinder Scholar, the Insight client, or EndNote connection files.
