Government Information Center (GIC)

GIC DeskLocated on the 1st floor at the north end of Davidson Library, the Government Information Center (GIC) contains our extensive collection of government documents.

Microform and media from the library’s general collections are also housed in the GIC.

Government Documents

The Davidson Library collects publications from the governmental agencies of the United States, California, Santa Barbara City and County, foreign countries, international organizations, and the western states of the U.S.  Most U.S., California, and local documents are housed in the GIC, while others are shelved in the main library.  The majority of the collections can be located by searching the library catalog.

Microform Collection

Our microform collections consist of materials in microfilm, microfiche, and microcard formats.  We have equipment in the GIC that can read, print, or scan microform materials.

Media Collection

The library’s video collection is shelved in the GIC, with the exception of juvenile videos, which are housed in the Curriculum Laboratory.  Most of the collection is in DVD or VHS format.  Videos may be checked out at the main Circulation Desk, or viewed on the library’s video machines in the GIC or Curriculum Laboratory.

Computing Area

The GIC has a small number of public computers and a printer.  In addition, there are computers for viewing, printing, and scanning microform materials.  There are also scanners available for scanning print materials.  We highly recommend that you bring a USB drive or CD-ROM with you when you use the scanners.
