CONSERVATION & BINDING - x2584

The Preservation Unit is in charge of in-house binding and mending of monographs and serials, as well as the preparation of monographs for shipment to the U.C. Book Bindery. Various mending techniques are employed for repairs.

The binding types are:

  • Pamphlet Binding: an in-house staple binding
  • Fastback Binding: an in-house adhesive binding
The Bindery Preparation Unit prepares serials for shipment to the U.C. Book Bindery and is responsible for updating holdings and receiving records in Pegasus.

Shipments to the U.C. Book Bindery are made every other Thursday. The turnaround time is 2 to 4 weeks, and is dependant on the type of material being bound. The Library sends an average of 100-150 monographs and 300-400 serials per shipment. Back to top

Dissertation Binding

For a copy of the Dissertion Binding Form: Dissertation Binding Form

Graduate students, committee members, or departments may wish to have bound copies of dissertations that have been filed with the Graduate Division. This may be accomplished by ordering copies through the Conservation Section of the Serials Department in the Davidson Library. To do this, you will need to fill out the requisition “Dissertation Binding Form”. The ordering process is handled through the student’s department, so students will need to reimburse their department for the cost of binding. See additional instructions on the Dissertation Binding Form. If you decide to order copies through the Davidson Library, you will need to supply the actual pages of your dissertation to the Library for binding (the Library will not reproduce the pages for you). These pages can but do not have to be on 100% cotton bond paper. Bring the requisition form, along with however many copies you wish to have bound to the Serials Department. The binding process takes about one month. Bound copies of the dissertation will be sent to the student’s department once they have been returned from the U.C. Bookbindery. For questions, feel free to contact Jessie Jones or David Howarter at (805) 893-2584.
