ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS LIBRARIAN


The University of California, Santa Barbara, one of the ten campuses of the UC, is looking for an Economics and Business Librarian. The successful candidate must be innovative, creative, energetic, self motivated and services oriented.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Head of the Information Services Department and participating in the Social Sciences Collection Group, the librarian has responsibility for reference and research consultation, instruction and collection management for Economics, Business, and Social Sciences Data Resources.

Works individually and as part of a group to provide reference and instructional services to students, faculty, staff, and the university community for all disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Participates in the Department’s services which includes scheduled Reference/Information desk service, electronic reference service, research consultation and a host of instructional programs. Includes some evening and weekend hours.

The incumbent participates in the libraries instruction program, teaching course integrated classes and library credit bearing courses in information research methodology. Responsible for the development and maintenance of printed and electronic guides to library resources in Economics and related areas.

Responsible for all aspects of collection management and development for Economics and Business, including selection of information resources, storage and weeding decisions, faculty liaison, collection interpretation, evaluation, budgetary management and resource sharing. Assumes a leadership role in planning and developing data services and collections and provides consultations and instruction on finding and using social sciences data. Evaluates, selects and acquires social sciences data products for the library.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required - – ALA accredited MLS. Academic background and/or knowledge of Economics and Business sources. Background or strong interest in social sciences data sources. Demonstrated reference experience in general and/or specialized reference services. Strong commitment to excellence in public service and the ability to work in a dynamic and challenging academic setting. Ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, and community users. Interest and enthusiasm for keeping abreast of current and evolving technologies. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred – Degree and/or relevant experience in the Social Sciences. Experience with Social Science collection development, and familiarity with current bibliographic and reference sources in the Social Sciences. Experience with print and electronic information resources, including designing and maintaining Web sites and pages. Experience working with numeric data resources, including the ability to download and transform data files to meet the various needs of users. Proficiency with social sciences statistical packages and software, such as SAS and SPSS.

S: Salary commensurate with qualifications, minimum $49,404. METADATA LIBRARIAN

The library memberships include ARL, CLIR, SPARC, and OCLC. The library is also a participant in the California Digital Library. The library collections include over two million volumes, government documents, microforms, sophisticated electronic resources, and numerous Special Collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services, the Metadata Librarian is responsible for organizing access to information resources using emerging and traditional metadata schemes. The incumbent provides leadership and guidance in selection of schema and data for digital initiatives. Develops, documents, and revise standards for metadata creation in the university libraries. Trains personnel in metadata creation and maintenance. Plans, manages, and reviews metadata for digital projects and provides guidance in selection of schema and data design. Develops workflows for metadata projects. Defines data elements, recommends usage and determines mapping among metadata schema. Writes and maintains policies and procedures relating to metadata projects.

Performs original and complex copy cataloging using appropriate cataloging standards. Performs MARC cataloging of a variety of materials including print, electronic and media, some in foreign languages. As an original cataloger creates NACO records or local authority records; revises NAF authorities, and may submit records to SACO. Participates in resolving systems issues relating to the online catalog. Participates in overall policy making, planning, problem solving and future directions for the department.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
ALA accredited MLS. Experience with one or more non-MARC metadata formats. Course work in cataloging and metadata. Knowledge of trends in information access pertaining to libraries, archives, and repositories. Experience in leading and managing projects. Working knowledge of D-space Fedora, ContentDM, or other CMS or Digital-Object management system. Working knowledge of HTML and CSS (cascading style sheets). Excellent organizational skills, proven problem solving ability and flexibility. Demonstrated initiative in fostering new ideas and in implementing change. Knowledge of current and emerging directions for metadata development and standards. Experience with personal computers and a variety of software including Web authoring software. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work in a collaborative and collegial environment.

Preferred:
Working knowledge of JAVA scripting, PHP, and website layout tools. Knowledge of conventional cataloging (MARC, AACR2, LCSH) and principles of authority control. Knowledge of one or more European languages.

ART LIBRARIAN


The University of California, Santa Barbara, one of ten campuses of the UC, is looking for an ART LIBRARIAN. The Art Librarian must be creative, enthusiastic, innovative, energetic, self motivated and service oriented.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Head of the Arts Library, and working with the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services, the librarian has responsibility for reference, instruction, cataloging, and collection development and management for the History of Art and Architecture, Department of Art, and the Media Arts and Technology Program.

The incumbent provides reference assistance and library instruction services to faculty and students. Scheduled reference service includes some evening and weekend hours. The Art Librarian collaborates with the Head of the Arts Library in collection development activities, including selection of information resources, preservation and weeding decisions, faculty liaison, and resource sharing. He/she is also responsible for the development and maintenance of printed and web-based guides to information resources.

Performs some original cataloging of art materials in all formats and a variety of languages. Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates library staff. Participates in library committees and task forces as appropriate. Represents the library in local, state, and national activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required - ALA accredited MLS. Academic background and/or knowledge of Art, Art History, Architecture or related disciplines demonstrated through undergraduate or advance degree, coursework, or work experience. Skills in supervision and management.

Demonstrated experience and strong commitment to public services including providing user-centered information and reference services in person, electronically, or by phone. Knowledge and experience in collection development and bibliographic instruction within the library and at other locations. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, faculty, students and community users in a diverse multicultural environment. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Demonstrated initiative and flexibility Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred – Knowledge of cataloging rules AACR2, USMARC formats, LCSH, metadata, and authority control. Experience using the ExLibris Aleph online system. Working knowledge of modern Western European languages. Knowledge of basic HTML and web page design.
