Quetzalcoatl Image

Tloque Nahuaque, Lord of the Close and the Near, in his aspect as Quetzalcoatl, patron of learning and the arts is recalled in motif and symbol. It is in the calmecac (House of Knowledge) and amoxcalli (House of Books) that the skills of in tlilli, in tlapalli (the red, the black), the ancient Mexican metaphor for writing and knowledge are taught practiced and conserved

History

One of the first Chicano Studies collections, and the only funded continually for 30 years by a Research Library. Established in 1969 and in the present location since 1971, the Chicano Studies collection is located on the second floor of the South Wing of the Davidson Library. Known by its study room designation, Colección Tloque Nahuaque*, Lord of the Close and the Near, in his aspect as Quetzalcoatl, patron of learning and the arts. The collection draws together the specialized resources of the University Library in one place for study and research on the historical and contemporary Mexican American experience in the United States.

One of the leading collections of its kind in the country, the Colección has over 20,000 volumes and each year adds about 500 new titles in Chicano Studies. Disciplines of major emphasis are Education, History, Literature, Labor, Religion and the Arts. A "Close Stacks" or restrictive collection of rare, one of a kind, and out of print titles adds great research value to the Colección. The collection has several hundred serials (journals, and periodicals) current as well as retrospective some are bound others in microfilm format.

Additionally, the Colección maintains a collection of historical documents, periodical articles (over 10,000), posters and ephemera. The Audiovisual collection consists of over 250 Videos, historical and documentaries, as well as close to 100 audiocassette recordings. Items on these files are indexed individually by author, title, and subject. The book, serial, and audiovisual collections are fully indexed and accessible through PEGASUS the on-line catalog for UCSB, and MELYVYL (CDL) the UC system on-line catalog, available through the Internet.

The Colección serves not only the UCSB population but it also draws users from the community, local schools, colleges, as well as scholars and researchers from throughout Europe and Mexico. There is a great demand for the Chicano Studies materials from institutions around the country. Requests from outside UCSB are received and processed through the Inter Library Loans Service, available via the library Web. Not all materials
will be lent, however.

Some books in the Colección can be checked out through the main circulation desk, others are restricted for use within the library only. PEGASUS gives the circulation statusof each book; in addition, each book is marked accordingly.

The Colección study area is open the same hours as the main library. (See Schedule of Service Hours for more information)

Tloque Nahuaque
Cerca juntos tloque nahuaque,
--Annonymous poem
