Curriculum Collection

The Curriculum Lab's primary collection includes children's literature, nonfiction, textbooks, and teacher's resources, such as curriculum guides and activity books. A collection of media materials, including audiocassettes, videocassettes, DVDs, kits, games, software, CD-ROMs, manipulatives, study prints, pamphlets, and posters is also available. Equipment and facilities are available for viewing most media materials. The reference collection contains specialized bibliographies, encyclopedias, biographical dictionaries, indexes, and sources for children's book reviews.

Most of the curriculum collection is cataloged and listed in PEGASUS, the UCSB Library online catalog. Use the Advanced Search on PEGASUS to limit your search to the Curriculum Lab's collections. The following guides provide further information on locating materials in the Curriculum Lab:

The following web pages also provide many links to online resources for teachers and students:

ERIC Database and Document Collection

The ERIC database is the major index to journal articles and documents in education. The document collection is available online through the ERIC database from 1996 to the present and includes curriculum guides, lesson plans, research reports, conference papers, publications of educational associations, and other research and instructional materials. ERIC documents are also available on microfiche from 1966 to the present and are located in the Microform Area (1st floor, north) under the call number: LB 5 U5. ERIC database search guides are available in the Curriculum Lab and at the Main Reference/Information Desk.

Learning Resources Display Center (LRDC)

The Curriculum Lab serves as one of twenty-five display centers in California for state-adopted textbooks and instructional materials (grades K-8). Known as the Learning Resources Display Center (LRDC), this collection allows educators in Santa Barbara County to preview instructional materials submitted for state adoption and to view those resources that have been adopted by the California State Board of Education. Since the Curriculum Lab is bound by legal contract to have these materials on display, items in the LRDC do not circulate unless there is more than one copy. The following links provide further information on California state adoptions.

Library Cards for Teachers

The UCSB Library provides free community library cards to all certificated personnel in California public schools. Teachers should obtain a letter on school stationery, from their school administrator, identifying them as a certificated employee. Bring the letter to the Main Circulation Desk in the UCSB Davidson Library to receive the free library card.

Curriculum Lab Circulation Policies

Borrowing Materials

All circulating Curriculum Lab materials must be checked out at the Lab's Service Desk. The loan period for books is three weeks for all users. Audiocassettes, videocassettes, DVD's, software, and CD-ROMs circulate for one week. Only second copies of currently adopted LRDC materials may be checked out. All circulating items may be renewed up to five times, unless requested by another user. Please ask at the Service Desk for help with locating items that you do not find on the shelf, renewing books, or placing recalls on items already checked out.

Returning Materials

All Curriculum Lab books may be returned to the Lab or to any of the Davidson Library's book drops. Media materials may be returned to the Lab or to the Main Circulation Desk, but should not be deposited into book return bins.

Renewing Materials

An item may be renewed on or before the due date, provided it has not been recalled. Materials may be renewed in person at the Curriculum Lab, by mail, online through PEGASUS, or by email. Renewal request lists are available at the Service Desk and may be mailed to the Curriculum Lab at the address listed at the top of this page. When mailing a list, please provide sufficient time for us to advise you of any problems by return mail before an item becomes overdue. Materials can be renewed online by logging into PEGASUS, and signing in to Your Account (for detailed instructions see the Circulation Services web page). To renew by email, send a message to currlab@library.ucsb.edu; include your library card number, and the title, call number, and barcode of all items you wish to renew. Please retain your processed renewal list or email renewal message; they provide a record of your renewal and show your new due date. After a book has been renewed five times, it must be returned to the Curriculum Lab. Renewals are not made by telephone.

Blocks and Replacement Charges

All Lab materials must be returned on or before the due date. A borrower will be automatically blocked from checking out additional items if they have any overdue materials. No additional library transactions can be conducted by the user, including ILL and reserve book services, until the overdue material is returned or is thirty days overdue and replacement charges have been billed. Fines will continue to be charged for materials that have been recalled at the rate of $1.00 per day. After an item is overdue for thirty days, a replacement charge for the price of the book plus a non-refundable $15.00 processing fee will be assessed. Replacement charges and processing fees will appear on the monthly statement issued by the campus Billing and Accounts Receivable Office (BARC). If an item is returned within one year of the original due date, the replacement charge will be refunded.

Exiting the Library

Media materials must be handed to the attendant at the Library exit to avoid sounding the alarm.
