Long Range Plan Goals (6/18/98)


Vision 1

Develop an open, collegial environment among library personnel which encourages diversity, creativity, and organizational flexibility:

  1. Promote timely and open communication to involve employees, raise morale, and increase teamwork.
  2. Create a library work environment which rewards productivity, encourages collaboration, and provides training for basic and enhanced responsibilities.
  3. Involve all employees in decision-making, problem solving, and planning.
  4. Recruit and retain an ethnically diverse workforce of the highest quality.

Vision 2

Build and organize collections to meet the needs of an internationally acclaimed university.

  1. Obtain funding to build a collection that supports cutting edge research and undergraduate education.
  2. Organize and describe existing and new collections to provide convenient search and retrieval.
  3. Improve access to all collections through new and existing technology.

Vision 3

Promote user-centered services which recognize instruction and research needs as the library's primary focus.

  1. Promote patron access to resources for effective library use.
  2. Provide appropriate staffing levels to assist all users.
  3. Simplify library policies and standardize library services to be more responsive to user needs.
  4. Improve access for off-site users.
  5. Regularly evaluate the success of user services

Vision 4

Establish a collaborative instructional environment with the campus that complements and expands the learning process.

  1. Promote information literacy as an integral component of undergraduate education.
  2. Promote and integrate library instruction into appropriate campus courses.
  3. Assist in the process of training graduate students in scholarly research.
  4. Participate in campus instructional planning and innovation.

Vision 5

Create new facilities designed to integrate printed and electronic resources.

  1. Articulate library space and equipment needs through participation in campus planning.
  2. Provide appropriate space to house collections in all formats.
  3. Create a flexible and inviting library environment.

Vision 6

Collaborate with UC and external information providers to enhance access to information in any form.

  1. Promote University-wide access to information resources.
  2. Encourage reciprocal borrowing and sharing of information with external providers.
  3. Actively participate in the California Digital Library.
  4. Promote the adoption of standards for information exchange within the university and library community

Vision 7

Develop efficient use of resources within the library.

  1. Establish a planning process to anticipate changing library needs.
  2. Evaluate staff allocations on an annual basis.
  3. Evaluate funding allocations on an annual basis.
