Information for Patrons

Frequently Asked Questions

Donating Gifts:

The Library accepts materials from donors with the understanding that it is acceptance for review rather than for automatic addition to the collection. Books not added to the collection may be sold in the library's book sales and the revenue used to purchase new books. The library may request donors of rare or special material to sign a Gift Agreement Form. See the Library's Gift Acceptance Policy.

Bring donations to the Circulation Desk, the Information Desk or the loading dock. Please label the material "donations" or "gifts". If you would like to receive an acknowledgement, please leave your name and address.

How to find publishers' addresses and other information:

The library generally buys material from specialized vendors rather than from publishers. The Cataloging and Acquisitions Services department maintains very little information on publisher address. Please contact a reference librarian by calling 893-3133 or email ask@library.ucsb.edu.

How to acquire out of print books:

Many antiquarian and out-of-print book stores provide a search service to help you locate out-of-print items. Check telephone directories, particularly those of large cities, to identify out-of-print dealers that specialize in specific subjects. Please consult a reference librarian for assistance in finding directories of antiquarian book dealers.
