Library and Internet Resources for Media Arabic
BROADCAST MEDIA: TELEVISION
For programs with audio, you will need to check out a pair of headphones from the 1st floor Information desk. There are no speakers connected to the PCs in the Library. If you are using the Library PCs, please be advised that Quick Time, Real Player, and Windows Media Player programs are already installed and should not be downloaded.
- Aswaat Arabiyya
This program, developed at Emory University, is a regularly updated site that includes television news broadcasts from Arabic speaking countries. You can even slow down the speed! You may download the program on your own PC, but you can fully access the program in the library by going to any of the five public access PCs on the 5th floor.
- SPHERES OF INFLUENCE -- an interative map of the world with television newscast feeds. Located at the East entrance to the library. Instructions are posted. Just for fun; there is no place to sit since movement activates the news feeds from around the world.
- SCOLA
Newsfeeds from around the world, including some which are live. Channel 5 has the most Arabic broadcasts. See the Middle East Studies Librarian (gaston@library.ucsb.edu or 893-7686) for Username and Password
- Al-Jazeera
To reach televised newsclips, click on "al-Fada'iyah" in upper right hand corner. To view, click on boxed heading with camera symbol under the pictures; or, on right panel, click on a subject listed under "Istami' li-ahdath al-taqarir"

Click on grey radio button on left labelled "Tilifiziyun Sultanat 'Uman"
- Tilifiziyun al-Mustaqbal (Lebanon)

Requires Real Video Player G2. Click on "Clips" on left panel, or, on "Direct", then on multicolor t.v. screen to activate

PRINT MEDIA: NEWSPAPERS AND NEWS SERVICES
UCSB Library subscribes to the Friday North American edition of AL-AHRAM. Current issues are found in the Current Periodicals Room on the First Floor. The international newspapers are found in their own section and then alphabetically by title (Aisle 3, section 27). The issues of AL-AHRAM are kept until microfilm arrives. The microfilm is located in the GIC in the microfilm cabinets. The call number is: AN325 .A3

UCSB Library has links to several online Arabic newspapers. In most cases, these are free access links, so you should not have to set your proxy server to get them. As free access titles, generally only the current issue or issues for the last week are available. At this time the library does not have a subscription to any online Arabic newspapers.
